We’ve got a lot of creative people here, looking at all the awesome bunny toys I already saw on this forum.Let’s post our arts&crafts stuff here to showcase our creativity

I had some questions about my hobby in another thread: making costumes for a LARP club. LARP (Live Action Role Playing) is playing a role-playing game (think Dungeons and Dragons), while breing dressed as your character. The gamemasters set up a world, set the beginning of the story, and then liven up the world with NPCs you can interact with. An NPC is a non-player character, put into the game  to give you some backrground about the world and to send you on quests. This can be the humble herbwoman who needs help gathering healing herbs, or the corrupt magistrate sent here by the king who makes village life miserable and needs to be evicted. You choose which adventure you want to do.

You have several themes: medieval fantasy, steampunk, high-magic fantasy, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic…and the list goes on. For most LARPs a certain building or terrain is decorated to look like a specific theme. For our medieval fantasy LARP we rent a piece of forest and two cabins from a local scouts club, and turn that into a medieval village surrounded by a haunted wood. The village is a trade hub in the middle of the wood, but you’ll need experienced guides to lead you through the ever-changing paths. At night things really come to life: all kinds of creatures pop up, people are lured into the woods or abducted there. And what better place to scheme plots than a haunted forest? Players with less-friendly plans slip into the woods together with experienced guides to evade the eyes of the other village folk. Rumours are that there are magic users amongst us village folk, but who are they?

I make costumes for the NPCs and occasionally also for players themselves. These costumes don’t have to be period-accurate in the way of materials or styles, because it only needs to have a fantasy feel to it. As said in another topic: you can see Viking-era people sitting in the tavern next to a Renaissance lady. Fabrics are also difficult, because natural fabrics like linen and wool are extremely expensive. The rougher it looks, the more it costs. So in LARP it costs a fortune to play a lowly peasant in rags, but it’s very easy and cheap to play a well-to-do merchant.

This is a coarsely knitted chaperon, a piece of medieval headgear. It covers the head, neck and shoulders. The long point can be draped like a shawl. This is a very simple peasant style, I made it to keep myself warm during these weekends outdoors.

A millstone-collar, made from a very long piece of fabric which was folded many times. Historically they were starched and ironed to ruffle them, but I just used fusible interfacing. Sssshhh, don’t tell anyone!

A full set of priestly robes, made from wool and lots of fancy ribbon. You can’t see it well on the picture, but it has a high collar. It’s all in 1 piece, so the headpiece is attached to the robes itself.

This is a sash I made for a friend of mine. He was going to another LARP with a group, playing a band of demonic mobsters who were out to make some devious deals. The sash itself is just some satin-like shiny fabric, the logo is hand-embroidered.

One of the most hilarious pieces I did: the gamemasters wanted someone to be robbed by things lurking in the haunted forest. They selected a player who plays a very epic warrior: a rugged man who is reputed to carry around at least 7 swords at all times. He was lured into the haunted woods and robbed there by something insanely powerful. Then he was sent back to the village wearing only his silken underwear with a gigantic golden codpiece, screaming loudly: “Don’t you dare laugh” Of course hilarity ensued

This costume, “zee royal culottes” was inspired by the codpiece-fad amongst European royalty in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Your work is gorgeous, Ellie. The interface for the millstone collar is brilliant.

This is just amazing, Ellie! Beautiful work!

That’s so funny, that it costs more to play a wealthy merchant than a peasant =)

The chaperon looks quite wearable in real life.

Thank you all ^_^ I’ve been doing embroidery and costuming since I was 6, and my dream for the future is to have my own small business. However, it’s very time-consuming and it’s impossible to make a living wage out of it in my current situation. Things like that sash would go for more than €100 if you have an hourly wage of €4. But maybe I can do this on the side when my BF and I move in together. When we have 1 stable income, who knows what can happen

It’s actually the other way Bam: peasant dress is more expensive in LARP. For a noblewoman, just go to the nearest thrift shop and get yourself some silk nightgowns. Then get a pair of scissors and thread, and snippetysnip: a silk dress. For peasant dress you’ll have to knit things for yourself or buy coarse linens. Those costumes are usually way over €50, and you’ll have to pre-distress those costumes before you start to LARP. A peasant should at least have some frayed clothing and a little bit of dirt here and there I think this came from Blackadder: “Baldrick, how do you know that this man is the king?” “Well, he seems to be the only one not covered in sh!t, milord!”

Hihihi, yes the culottes are absolutely outrageous. For some reason men wearing this automatically start doing pelvic thrusts… Hmm…why would that be?
A friend of mine saw them and immediately wanted his own pair. He took that to another LARP and he freaked out so many people there. He’s a guy who can wear this with a perfectly straight face and a posh British accent XD

Ellie, sorry I got it mixed up, of course you said the peasant’s clothes were the more expensive. My head is still not right. It must be amazing to take part in these LARPs! Do you design the costumes too?

Awww, don’t worry about it Bam, you’re going through some tough stuff now

Yes, it’s an amazing feeling to be part of a LARP. All the preparations start months before, and it all culminates in a weekend of absolutely crazyness. Monsters, make-up, drama, and crazy plots Luckily I’m only the cook and the costumer.

I design the costumes myself, with input from the players or the gamemasters. Sometimes the gamesmasters come to me with an idea, for instance: we want to introduce a new people to the world, a sort of mix between hippies and gypsies who are connected to nature. So I decided to make the whole thing in greens, browns, greys with the occasional greyblue in it. For the girls I made wide wrap-skirts, bandanas for the head, crocheted hip-shawls with tassles and off-the shoulder blouses with embroidery. For the men I made felt vests with embroidery and wide flopppy-brimmed hats in brown. We already had brown pants and beige blouses.

Nice work! Thanks for sharing the pic! It must be enormously time consuming. So does the club pay for your supplies?

Luckily I’m only the cook and the costumer

The Cook as in a character? Or you’re actually feeding all that attend these weekends also??!!!

p.s. I love that you just quoted Baldrick !

Yes of course the club pays for the materials. Only the materials though, and of course replacements/repairs for my sewing accessories. I can’t receive any payment for it, because of my disability. It’s also just a hobby and stuff I make for friends

The cooks are only semi-IC (IC means “In character”), so they don’t get bothered by players. Of course we dress accordingly, but not in very elaborate costumes. You’ll still have to cook in them ^_^ I cook for all the people with special diets and allergies, approx. 8-10 people each activity. We also take care of the campfires and the logistics. Busy bees

Hehe, my BF and I both love Blackadder.

                            Yes, 100% Blackadder <3

Really awesome costumes. I really miss being crafty, no inspiration lately I suppose and nothing’s organised which is also probably part of the problem.

Ellie, those are so gorgeous You have a gift, that’s for sure. What kind of embroidery do you do? I can only crosstitch and do some other basic stuff that I don’t know the English name.

Thank you Bubbles I also do cross stitch and several other styles. Silk-style was used in the sash in the picture above. You use a hoop to put tension on the fabric, and then you embroider small flat stitches very close to eachother.

I’m currently working on decorative embroidery: girdles for a new faction in the setting. They are inspired by wood elves.

The white one is from sturdy cotton fabric, embroidered with dark blue, green and golden metallic thread in a bundle of 4 threads. This is for the leader of the group. The brown ones are for the guards, a regular belt can be put through them so they will fit snugly around a waist. These are also meant to carry LARP swords in.

Wow, how fun!!!!!! Beautiful Work!!! Both the game and costume making sounds fun!!!!!

I’m also an avid embroiderer/crafter. And I love making and designing costumes. Nothing adult sized as yet. If you’ve seen any of my past Halloween threads you can see my skills at making wee little bunny sized costumes. It’s been a tradition the past few years to make and dress up my buns for costumes. However, I think that tradition ended when Olivia passed away. I very much doubt Sterling will tolerate costumes.

And so far my 2 year old has attended comic conventions dressed as a Ninja Turtle (I had to make most of the costume because she was not even a year old and we couldn’t find one small enough), an Ewok and this year I’m planning on a toddler version Harley Quinn costume.

I also really enjoy working with felt and I make a lot of bunny crafts (of course).

Here is some of my work:

LPT, is the Savana one for your memorial shelves?
One of my fave items you made is the little dracula bunny. Do you still have a pic of that?

Yes, the Savana ornament will be for my memorial shelf. I got her ashes back but have yet to find an urn pretty enough to put her to rest in.

                                          Here he is, Jersey.

He’s my first plushie so I’m not 100% happy with how he turned out but I think he’s pretty cute too. I put him out for Halloween.

Yay, I just finished this birthday gift for a friend of mine. We were at her house with a group of friends, and I was knitting myself a chaperon for the LARP. She kept looking at it, and I subtly hinted: “So, if people want this as a birthday gift, just say so!” Hehe, smooth isn’t it?

She chose the colour, it’s brick red. A bit more brown than it shows in the pics, but this is my spud phone camera at its best.

6 people chipped in to buy the wool. We usually give gifts together as a group, because you can get something really special if you have a higher budget. Recently we’ve started this small tradition where I make people custom LARP items or geeky home decorations, and that’s even more personal.

The chaperon was knitted with very thick acrylic wool, which doesn’t itch. I used size 8 mm knitting needles and 4,5 balls of Katia Artico wool. Currently I’m working on the pattern, so I can keep it for future reference.

I draped the chaperon over the back of my office chair and put a styrofoam mannequin head into it. The mannequin head is smaller than a normal human head, the chaperon hood starts just below the chin. It’s extra wide, so the hood falls over the shoulders a bit.

The hood looks extremely oversized now, but that’s because there are no shoulders beneath it. It’s draped over the back of my office chair, which doesn’t have the bulk to fill it in.

Close-up of the shoulder part and the decorative edge below.

Love this and would love try knit it when the weather turns cool here again. I would likely botch it up but still be keen to give it a go. And actually finish it haha. I only know basic knitting and tend not to finish what I start.

What is the stitch bordering the hood, around the face?

What is the stitch bordering the hood, around the face?

Thank you, and also thank you for your personal message. I’ll send the pattern to you as soon as I’m finished, planning to finish it this month.

The stuff below here is all a bit technical, not sorry because I’m a knitting geek

The stitch on the border is called a “seed stitch”, it’s a special stitch that won’t curl. You may have noticed that knittings in the basic stockinette stitch (the V’s all over) tend to curl horribly. This happens when there’s no balance between “knit” and “purl” stitches within each row. The knits are the V’s and the purls are the ~ shapes you get when you look at the back of your V’s. Thread tension is different in knits and purls, and as long as that’s unbalanced within a row your work will always curl.

But there’s a way to fool your knitting: make edges in the seed stitch. That’s what I’ve done on the lower hem of the collar and the hem of the cowl. The seed stitch is quite basic but fun, and gives a nice effect. It alternates between knit (k) and purl (p) each stitch and each row.

                                                            For knitting on round needles:

                                                            row 1: k,p,k,p….k,p

                                                            row 2: p,k,p,k….p,k

                                                            Continue like this.

For knitting in rows (front, turn work, knit the back):

                                                            row 1: k, p, k, p…..k, p

                                                            row 2: k, p, k, p…..k, p

Yes, you read that correctly. You see, when you work in rows, each knit stitch will become a purl at the other side of the work and vice versa.

In a picture (I hope you can see it well). Taking pictures of knitting is very hard, as you get shadows everywhere and it’s hard to focus.

                                                            Costs:

Wool costs for this pattern are 5 balls of size 10 wool. I used Katia Artico which was €8,95 per ball.

You’ll also need a set of 8 mm double-pointed needles for knitting in rounds, a 6 mm crochet hook, a row counter and stitch markers.

                                                            About the pattern itself:

The pattern is for intermediate knitters or for beginners who want to expand their knowledge and are in for a challenge. It involves the following techniques, which will be explained in the pattern.

                                                            • Knit and purl stitches and combinations of these (stockinette stitch and seed stitch)
                                                            • Chain edges for a nice finish of the edge of the cowl
                                                            • Circular knitting with 4-5 double-pointed needles
                                                            • Reading knitting patterns with symbols
                                                            • Decorative decreases: left-leaning SSK (slip-slip-knit), right-leaning K2tog (knit 2 together)
                                                            • Increases for shaping (make-one-left technique)
                                                            • Kitchener stitch for fastening off invisibly
                                                            • Basic crochet stitches for the decorative lower hem: single, double and triple crochet

Been busy with LARP costumes again, and people wanted to see pics of the finished costumes. Instead of fouling up the chat thread I thought I’d post my recent stuff here Lots of pics incoming!

For the last couple of months I worked on a wedding dress, two angelic robes and a mantle out of leaves. It was awesome to work on, because I could practice many new techniques: blind zippers, lace sewing and creating a pattern just from measurements to make a form-fitting dress. Great practice if I ever decide to do this on a larger scale!

These costumes are for the two main characters in this weekend’s LARP, and these costumes will be used often as the storyline progresses. The two main characters are opposing forces of rebirth/creation and death/destruction, that’s why I used a spring vs. autumn theme. The autumn theme is quite clear in the “leaf mantle”: a mantle stitched with nearly a thousand overlapping leaves in a colour shifting pattern. There are 3 shapes of leaves: elongated, drop shaped and 5-point. All were hand-made and mostly hand-sewn too.

View of the rear, mantle with large hood       View of the front, the mantle is fastened by a brass hook and eye

Here are some close-ups of the individual leaves:

The angelic robes are meant for the guardians of the rebirth/creation spirit, the bride of spring. She’s still weak because she was nearly destroyed by a fallen saint who wanted to take her place in the pantheon. She was torn apart and buried around the corners of the world, but the players rescued her and resurrected her at our previous event. Just in time too, because the spirit of destruction was haunting the place with ghouls and other evil forces.
The costume for her first appearance was a wedding dress I had to make out of lace curtain scraps because our club lacked a budget, so people started to call her “the curtain bride”  Wasn’t fun for the girl playing her as well, but someone donated a huge collection of fabrics and I was able to make her this awesome dress. (Also totally “in character” appropriate to switch costume: if you’ve been buried in rags for centuries, you’d definitely want something new and shiny when you rise again.)

The robes for the guardians are pretty simple robes with some gold decorative bands. Basically: throw someone on a piece of folded fabric, draw a snow angel, sew, hem, done! The keyhole neckline was a nice new technique to experiment with.

The wedding dress was a great way to experiment with several new techniques: making a V-neck in sheer fabrics, sewing with lace, blind zippers, making a new pattern by taking someone’s measurements to make a form-fitting dress. Form-fitting is not done often in LARPs, because it can get very cold outside. Costumes are usually baggy so people can wear layers or thermo under them.
I expressly forbade her to start piling up layers like a polar explorer, and to make sure that she was warm enough while looking pretty I sewed a thermo dress from a fleece blanket. It has detachable sleeves in case she wants to show off the lacework on the sleeves of the wedding dress.

                                                                  Thermo dress with detachable sleeves:

The wedding dress was made for a curvy petite girl with a bit of a tum, she normally hates dressing girly. She was very surprised to see herself in a long dress with a well-defined waistline. She thought it makes her look a lot taller and slimmer, and she wouldn’t take it off at the fitting sessions . The dress has a fitted top with lace sleeves and an empire waistline. The skirt is thickly pleated and flares out below the waist, it’s finished with a simple silk ribbon to accentuate the waist.

The wedding dress front view:                                 Rear view with ribbon knotted into a bow:

I finally managed to do the blind zipper too!
(The top looks a bit lopsided on the pic, but that’s because it’s hastily draped over something)

As requested by the girl it has an enormous veil with small crocheted flowers everywhere. It fastens by knotting a hair band, also covered in flowers.

Thank you! I get that question quite often, but my answer is always: it’s just a fun little hobby at this time. It’s the reason why so many people visit me to work on the costumes together, and something that lets me have fun even though I’m feeling miserable. I’d like to keep it fun by not doing anything illegal with it. Maybe someday I’ll upgrade my hobby into a small business, but not now that my situation is not stable yet, and not outside of the system. Every time that someone cheats it damages the system. We explicitly pay for disability benefits ourselves during our career, a large chunk of your income is directly reserved for this collective nationwide insurance. People already have to prove a lot to get disability payments, and cheating that system only leads to more and more invasive controls etc. My disability is “invisible”: you can’t take an X-ray and see something there. It’s already very difficult to prove to the government that I’m really ill, even though all my doctors and therapists are behind me, that makes the process quite invasive. It’s pretty humiliating to have to convince their doctors in a 2,5 hour cross-examination, they often have the mindset: “If I can’t see it, you’re probably faking it…”.
I’m not about to make this situation worse for myself and fellow people with a disability by trying to work around it.

@Q8: Thank you!  I hope that my friends are out in the woods enjoying it too. It’s a bummer I can’t join them anymore because my condition got worse, but I’m hoping for pictures of the costumes being put to good use!

oooooooh I love this thread! Everyone is so talented!

Ellie, you do fantastic work! I am so jealous! All this stuff you do is so cool, my twin sister would absolutely freak for a costume like that for their D&D campaigns! I wish that I had a skill like that! I can’t wear any of my crafts  Also, I commend you for wanting to make an honest living! It really does contribute to making things much worse when people try to hide their income so they don’t affect their government benefits. I really do think that is so awesome of you to not want to cheat the system; I know so many that do and it just makes the problem worse for everyone!! You sound like a great person

I took up pyrography last year. It’s more commonly called wood burning. I love all things Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit, so I made a ton of that type of stuff for practice. I haven’t done it at all though since last Christmas!! I have been so busy this year with work and school, and I just hadn’t found the time. But I  pulled out my tool and got to work! I haven’t used it in nearly 10 months, so I still need to do a lot of practicing to get the technique down again. This came out a lot rougher than I wanted, I wanted to do some shading in the bunnies but I totally botched that so I just decided to burn everything in and make it a “silhouette”. You can’t tell as well since the buns are colored in, but one is a lop (supposed to be Quincy) and the other is supposed to be Ophelia!

You can still see the contours of the legs and the lop ears, and I think it looks great. The detailing looks very precise and you have a steady hand, that’s clear. But I understand that you’re always your own worst critic

Thank you, it’s the result of a hobby that’s been going on for over 25 years now. Many of my childhood pictures involve me sitting somewhere in the quietest spot in the house fiddling with something  Yes, that one on the left was taken when my dad found me behind the fridge .
The one on the right was me at age 7, on my grandparents’ farm. I was hiding away together with grandpa in the “sunday room”, far away from all the cheek pinching great-aunts. A sunday room is a special room next to the front door of a farmhouse which is richly decorated with all your best stuff. It’s the room you only use when there’s some official occasion, or to receive visiting dignitaries. It was my grandfather’s domain, and he always let me in because I was the quiet grandchild. He loved reading and listening to classical music there, and I gladly joined him with some sewing or embroidery.

I usually pick something up and do it for a bit and then move on to something else. I did crochet for a little bit and made a few hats and scarves, but I am such an impatient person and I just gave up somewhere along the road… I was a very rowdy child lol but my mom was super into crafts and decorating, so I think it rubbed off on me!

Ellie, amazing clothes! The leaf cape is so beautiful and so clever. In Sweden there were Sunday rooms in farm houses as well. Noone went in there except on Christmas Eve or when dignitaries visited =). There probably are a few odd farm houses that still have a Sunday room I think, but they’re about to go extinct very soon. They weren’t called Sunday rooms here, I think the term was the Nice Room or the Good Room or sth like that. Very nostalgic!

Nice bam, it’s a great hobby! It’s great that people pick up “old” arts and crafs so they’re not lost. I hope you’ll have lots of fun

Thanks for the compliment, it sure was an insanely big project. People loved to see it on the LARP, and several actually messaged me to thank me for the costumes ^_^ That usually doesn’t happen because I do everything behind the scenes. The players usually don’t notice all the work that goes into all the preparations, so that was nice to hear.

It’s an ancient tradition indeed, having a separate room in a farmhouse. It makes me very nostalgic too because it reminds me of my grandfather. He was very introverted too and used the room as a kind of sanctuary during parties and busy weekends. Or when my grandmother was blasting loud german schlager music and singing along. He always went: “Ach, mensch!” and hid somewhere quiet. Him and my grandmother were total opposites: she loved loud music, big crowds and dancing. They managed to be married for nearly 50 years by giving eachother space and letting them be themselves

Depending on the dialect those rooms are called “pretty room”, “sunday room” or (I kid you not!) the “flaunting room”. If you’re interested in the history, search for “pronkkamer” and you’ll find many Dutch examples of these rooms.

Yay, my biggest project ever is now finished! And none too soon because the LARP starts tomorrow…

The costume was my Sinterklaas gift to Bas. He wanted to play a new character because they’re entering another story arc. This time he’s going to play a nobleman in English early renaissance style, so I made him a Tudor hat and a doublet. Sadly he didn’t want the “short trousers and high socks look” which was popular during that era… But we don’t have to be period-accurate, it’s all for the look of the thing. I made him a really snug fitting pair of trousers out of dark velvet. The trousers have large decorative buttons.

Over all of that goes a short tabard with the coat of arms of that house. He plays the second son of the Carsewoodhe family. The tree speaks for itself and the crescent is a mark of cadency: a younger son will place an extra logo in his family crest to show his position in the family. The second son gets a crescent moon, the third son a star, the fourth a bird etc. The embroidery was done in cross-stitch on 18 count aïda. It was by far the most work-intensive piece of the entire costume, so I was really happy that I got it done in time!

Here is my stunning prince charming:

                                                                                    Details of the shoulders:

The Tudor hat (better pic of the details on the right):

Details of sleeve and button on trousers:

Coss-stitched family crest and tabard with gold edges (same as on the hat):

Oh, and I told him I’d personally kill him all over again if he manages to get killed during the first couple of events  No dashing after goblins, don’t you dare to be mauled by two-headed ogres, and always let one of your lackeys taste your drinks.

My unemployment counsellor managed to get me an appointment with a business expert, it’s in 2 weeks. I’ve studied a lot of new tailoring techniques during my illness of the last 2 years, and I feel ready to start my own atelier within a year or so. My chances of returning to the regular job market are very slim, and this will give me a sense of purpose and hopefully a modest income. It doesn’t even have to pay the bills, because we’re planning to move in together next year and we can share in the costs.
                                                                                    Let’s see where it’ll go

I can sort of understand how he didn’t want the short puffy trousers and the long stockings, it’s not what modern day man would feel very masculine wearing (although back in the day it was probably just super hot), but he looks like he could’ve pulled that off as well. He’d better not get himself killed!

                                                                                              Thank you, Heaven.

I’m really excited for the idea of opening my own atelier, although I’m afraid that profits will always be slim because there’s so much work in those costumes. We’ll just see where it goes

Thanks for the support everyone ^_^ That attention to detail is my signature style, and that’s something which is currently lacking on the market. There’s a lot of mass-produced stuff which all looks the same, often with awfully bad finishing (loose threads, seams which aren’t straight, poorly attached buttons). Friends often visit me to patch up their store-bought costumes.

I’m writing my business plan now, and I’ve noticed that there are two distinct groups in LARP: beginners and lifestylers. Beginners are often very young, have a limited budget and don’t want to make big investments because they’re still exploring the whole LARP scene. One of my plans for the atelier would be to upgrade costumes for the people who lack the budget to order a complete customised costume. Think about some nice buttons, applying decorative trims, or taking in the waist a bit to make it more form-fitting. Simple tailoring stuff This would be a good affordable option for beginners to liven up their uniform mass-produced stuff. Another way to attract beginners to my atelier would be to have an arts&crafts café. Beginners love to work on costumes together and they want to get to know others within the scene.

On the other side are the lifestylers who want a complete set of gear. Lifestylers are often 30+ with a good income, often unmarried or they have a partner who does LARP as well. They often have the confidence and experience to play leading roles and love to go wild with their outfits. They also have a lot of influence within the LARP scene, and their word of mouth will likely be the biggest source of new customers for me. Lifestylers usually have the budget to buy really fancy costumes, but don’t have a lot of time for fitting sessions. I’ll have to learn how to make custom costumes by just having 1 fitting session. Free weekends are sacred to this group of people, so they’ll want to visit the atelier during evenings. My inner night owl is hooting with delight ^_^

So, I guess coming back from the dead as a zombie is against the rules?

I still have to do a LOT of hand sanding and polishing before adding the brass and heating it to bend it to shape.

My daughter wants to Cosplay Yang from the animated series RWBY this Halloween. She has the hair for it, but the costumes for sale are out of my price range. If I had the dough I’d hire you to make it!

This should make a really great beginner level cosplay outfit. Some parts of these costumes can be pretty easily bought at shops or thrift stores. If she likes to cosplay the post-timeskip character it should be pretty easy to get these clothes at regular stores. You can make the patches with printable t-shirt stickers, or with fabric and iron-on double interfacing. This’ll stick to both the fabric of the costume and the patches.

An even better one is Man At Arms Reforged, a Baltimore armory that makes regular sharps and does amazing things creating weapons from popular shows and games. Great stuff.

I also make long and recurve bows. I’ve made 18 so far, and my first one is still shooting as far as I know. Love making bows and archery, but don’t hunt.

I love looking at weaponry, especially medieval looking stuff. And not really the same but I love when I happen to be at the barn when the farrier comes to shoe the horses. He does hot shoeing and I love watching him heat up and shape the shoe.

Bladesmith, amazing work. It looks like a lot of work but well worth it I’m sure.

Someone mentioned recently posting drawings and things. I haven’t really done any serious art in about 5 years, but I used to draw constantly. Digital art and colour pencil work mostly. My original drawing inspiration was The Lion King and I spent years drawing characters and scenes from the movie and making up my own characters etc. I expanded that over time into drawing other animals in cartoon and realistic style. I don’t know why I lost touch with it but it’s something I fell out of doing.

Anyway long story short, I thought I’d share a pic and thought you all might appreciate this one It’s from 6 years ago, I sketched it in pen and then just coloured straight onto that sketch, which isn’t something I normally do. I was walking around the town of Whiterun and I saw this detailing on the door: https://goo.gl/images/LxzwC7

I loved Skyrim, unfortunately it got a bit too tedious for me trying to finish the game, and the trigger came when my in-game husband (I think it was Vilkas from Whiterun) died/disappeared LOL. So I finally decided that was an excuse for me to stop playing.

Btw you guys are awesome. I love drawing and graphic designing, but sadly I just can’t muster up the energy to actively do these things anymore, especially since we got Kurotta. Hopefully one day I’ll get back into it!

Yeah it is nice Gaming is a common interest I have with hubs, so sometimes we do have “date nights” where we just stay home and game (with the most recent game being Orcs Must Die 2). Not been having much of that recently though. So worn out from work every Monday-Friday, and just wanna laze around doing nothing on weekends I’m free lol.

I also make long and recurve bows. I’ve made 18 so far, and my first one is still shooting as far as I know. Love making bows and archery, but don’t hunt.

Yep, this is why I started taking wood whittling classes. When the zombie apocalypse comes, I won’t have to go without butter knives and clothes hangers

I’m also 1/3 of the way towards finishing my 1000 cranes project.

I ask myself that frequently, enough. lol…

Would love to see some of your other work. I love archery. Did it in high school and just recently got a new bow and am excited to start it up again. The hard part is finding a place to practice. I live in the City and while I really dislike my neighbors, can’t really do it here. And all the archery clubs nearby are all hunting focused. I don’t want to shoot at a deer, even if it’s inflatable.

Love the origami, Thor. I was just telling my husband last night, I’d like to try it. I’ve seen quite a few bunny ones that are tempting. But don’t think I would have the patience to learn. I’m a very impatient person and it really makes no sense that I love hand embroidery. That’s the only thing I have patience for.

I’m going to dig around for my copy of that book this weekend.

The only other item I can fold is a kratong (loy kratong), thai or korean flower-like tea light holder.

Thor, I love the howling wolf – the metallic paper brings another element to it. Did you happen to see the rabbit by Ken Yonami that was on FB recently? It looked like matted gold paper. (ETA: Actually, a search is giving me another name, Ron Koh.

Lol !

This week, Ive worked on a toy for my neice. I plan to make 2 so her baby brother can have one too. The toy is Flop, a character from Bing the Bunny.
It’s animation but the character looks like a knitted toy. Im up the the assembly stage.

I think I’ll knit the next one on smaller needles because the stuffing will show through on the one Ive already done.  I *may* show it here once complete.  Do they have a site for Knit-Wrecks like they do for Cake Wrecks?

I’ve recently been watching some progress of a stained glass piece someone is making.  It really has inspired me to look into learning it and making a memorial piece for my Mum. She loved stained glass and had an interest in learning the art, although time didn’t allow for that with raising the family and other commitments.

One for our breathtakingly accomplished true artists, (it’s such a privilege to see your work!!!) and then one for the dabbling mere mortals (me).

I have to recommend wood whittling/wood carving though. It’s a very nice activity to do outside this time of year. I’m slowly learning. I haven’t cut my hands in quite a long time now (although I did manage to drill into my thumb the other day).

Daisy your work is stunning. You’ve really mastered the different art forms. Horses for you, for me it was lions, though I never got quite so good. I love the depth of form on the white horse creature. What drew you to horses initially?

I also find them much more interesting to draw than humans, because they can have so many different colours, forms and breeds while humans are always, well, uh, humans. They are so boring, uninteresting and also annoying to draw.

I wish I could draw a bit, would be so thankful for just a bit. Sometimes I have to do costume sketches and it ends up looking like a toddler’s doodle.

I find that these days customised stuff are getting more recognition than before since the item will be the “one and only” in the world. In this era of “individuality”, people are willing to pay more for a special customised something.

I’ve lost my mojo in detailed drawings/graphic designs since life started getting busy. I still hope that one day I’ll get to make a business out of my designs, but for now I’ll have to stick to the corporate 8am-5.30pm working life (thanks bills) and having my energy sapped by the end of the day

In the midst of this though, I found something that takes less time to do but can still provide an avenue for me to get my creative fix. It’s something I got into fairly recently the last 1-2 years, and I’ve been practicing on and off. There’s always room for improvement, but looking back at my previous hand-lettering work, I’m comforting myself that at least there’s some improvement LOL.

I prefer the medium to firm ones because they’re so much easier to control and practise with. Pentel and Tombow are pretty good starter pens

I can keep this thread going on and on but I will try not to… I’ve been knitting, crocheting and tatting for decades… I started when I was 8… I began sewing my own clothes when I was 11 ( during the mini skirt and cut off tops of the late 80s where I was just waiting for the long “hippie” style skirts and Laura Ingalls dresses to magically come into fashion… some did, some didn’t… ) I always had a fascination with renaissance and Victorian era dresses. I also embroider… these days when I decide to embellish dresses. Etc. I also jewelry design and make jewelry, paint, lace make… so here are a few of my creations… these days I spend much of my time building a collection of cable knitted sweaters because just like I began sewing to make skirts and dresses long enough for my taste and fashion sense, I now feel there are never enough long well made cardigan sweaters ( long enough for me… that is!) I will add in some pics…

With some of the diagnosis I have, it’s pretty difficult to see from the outside, and the system also makes me go thru that stinking 2 doctor evaluation… Doctors that don’t know me, or anything abt me outside of what they thumbed thru the charts… it’s horrible and demeaning. What’s harder is the panic I feel every time I see a letter in the mailbox from them. They often say at the end of my evals, “… We see that you have been disabled in the past, are at this time, disabled, but we do feel your conditions will get better. We will re evaluate you Next Year.”

I hope you get thru each day doing something that continues to bring you joy!

I’m indeed glad that the disability system exists as a safety net, but it’s rather horrible that they seem to think that everyone is a fraud. Especially the re-evaluations can turn into a really rough cross-examination. Oh my, last time lasted 2,5 hours instead of 1. Constantly the same questions, over and over, always asked in a different way. Am I being detained officer?

Quite young here as well: 34, rheumatic illness since 2010. 2 years ago I got a bad flare-up which hasn’t died down. Now I need a wheelchair/mobility scooter when leaving the house. Something has irritated a nerve in my lower back going into my right leg, so walking, standing etc. has all become difficult. My counselor advised me: please get re-evaluated because you’re doing so much worse than 3 years ago. True… I’ve been staring at the papers for weeks now, not really daring to send them in. First time I’m really procrastinating…

Beautiful work! Thanks for sharing. Really love the cardigans- especially the olive green one. It’s winter here, I could easily see myself living in one of those.

I have never embroidered etc, so I’m very excited! I don’t think the idea would have entered my head if it weren’t for this thread.

But I’m learning how to make wedding/engagement/everyday rings from wood and possibly resin in the future.

Nothing wrong with that!  My eldest daughter, who is 23 this year (Holy bunny poop I’m old…) asked for, and received, a pair of what she called “Dating” knives for her 16th birthday. She ended up with a pair of  3″ blades with a bright pink micarta handle, and a heart shaped hilt.  On a garter band sheath.   She quipped that she would always have “protection” on her dates.

I really am so thankful for the safety net, I do know not every country does this or not even close, but I completely agree with everything you said 100%.

We just had a hot and a little humid summer day here… and 3 of my neighbor’s and I got together and had garage sales! So we were sweating it out! Always fun and a really positive feeling afterward being able to shed extra stuff out of our homes… it’s so amazing how much stuff we have! I’m pretty fortunate that I don’t overdo shopping all year, also helps that I have tiny closets! But it was a productive and active day…another tomorrow! ?

Which meant every year I was shocked with doing every single award and diploma! And I loved it! Nice money as well for a kid… my garage sale signs today were all in old English gothic! Just for the fun of it!

I found that Perler beads a fun arts and crafts thing that anyone can do. All you have to do is find pixel art, or make your own, and copy it using Perler beads. It is a good way to pass time and once you finish it, you can iron it and hang it up wherever. Here are a few of the Perler bead things I’ve made:

And this is a checkerboard, the pokeballs are not attached, and they are made out of mini Perler beads while the board is regular Perler beads.

Especially the bunny one. Those look so fun! Always tempted every time I see a tub of them at the store. But too many hobbies, not enough time. When my daughter gets a bit older will be a fun craft we can do together.

It would be so great to go out to dinner again without being on the throne the whole night… But Bas saw piccies of the spiders and he absolutely refuses to go.

I’ve also been to Perth in the summer (November) and although I didn’t encounter any spiders too, THE FLIES WERE HORRIBLE! They are HUGE flies that literally try to locate your face like a GPS and proceed to stick onto them. Good luck if you have your mouth open.

A friend of mine asked me to make him a simple sleeveless vest out of fake snakeskin fabric. He’s going to play a crocodile dundee kind of character. I thought: you’re going to need a cork hat too!

And if I stop swatting them, they move on to my face ._.

I did have sunscreen on as it was pretty hot and I’ve already gotten sunburnt once on my previous trip to Australia so I wanted to avoid that.

I haven’t painted in years but just had the urge to. After painting that, I’ve just been hit with the desire to keep painting. I’ve since painted another bunny, and currently working on one of a superb fairy-wren. I’m loving it. I used to do most of my art in colour pencil, but I’m finding painting really satisfying since you can cover a surface so quickly. It’s also much easier on my hand and elbow, I think colour pencil used to affect my tennis elbow. But even though it’s only 3 paintings so far, I feel like I’m learning a lot.

I adore the Bam one. I saw the word fairy and got excited that it would say “fairy bunny”. That would be sweet!

My pets make me poor.
