         Sage’s thread.

I love this. I had never heard of Flemmies before joining BB.

Sage is gorgeous. Such a huggie too!

Thanks Odette…I never knew this breed existed until I researched rabbit breeds when we had decided to add a bunny to our family. I actually didn’t know most of the breeds existed….a bunny was a bunny…I knew there were differences in sizes as far as a “normal” sized bun and a “dwarf” bun but that is about as far as my knowledge went. Just like I didn’t know that a bun could be such a great house pet and big part of the family!! Most of what I know now is thanks to this forum.

I am so glad I found BB. This forum helped me learn and helped me convince my Hubby that adding a bunny to our lives was a good thing.
So thank you all! Without your knowledge and sharing of the lives you guys have with your fur babies…Sage would not be here making our lives so complete

Sage is a delight. I see Odette grow, but its subtle. I remember when Sage and Odette were almost the same size! She makes me want a Flemmie someday. I can just imagine the happiness she brings to your home.

Your husband is a bunny convert, I bet My boyfriend walks in and asks “where’s my girl?”

lol…Odette…I know what you mean….hubby comes in and says “hi hun” while petting Walker and giving him a treat, then goes right over to Sage’s room to give her raisins and pets…lol. Then I get my kiss and hug…I always say I see where I am in line!! LOL
When my husband and I first got together…he wasn’t much of an animal person (he had bad experiences with his ex-wife and animals she was a bit of an animal collector but didn’t really like cleaning up after them part….) I told him it could be a deal breaker because my life isn’t complete with out furbabies…I proved to him that animals can be a joy when you have someone that loves them AND cares for them properly.

here we are many many years later and he is so attached to our fur balls he worries about them and spoils them to death!

@LongEaredLions: I was looking at the pic’s from the day we brought her home and then today…her ears are growing like crazy. So have her back feet…lol

Being with her everyday it is hard to see the daily/weekly changes but I take sooo many pictures (sorry btw) that I can put last weeks pics and this weeks pics up on my screen and compare!! I have files and files on my computer of Walker and now Sage pics. I am a bit obsessed!

Love this thread! Sage has definitely been making me think that when the Chewster and I find our forever home, we may get a gigantor bun whether he gives me bunny butt or not.

Anyway this morning while investigating – she found Walkers food storage containers and naturally had to check it out…

In this pic she is fully extended and is standing 2 foot 1 inch high

Vienna I saw both of those photos back when I was researching….LOL…. actually the second one the lady has a video from when she was inducted into the Guinness world record for longest angora hair….in the video she says that when the time came for her baby to become a mother she had to cut her down as “her boyfriend didn’t have the equipment to find her hidden treasure under her coat…so she had to go naked in order to be sexy” lmao that is a direct quote….I laughed so hard I cried when I watched the video….lol

There’s a photo out there of a cute old man wearing a French beret type hat, holding a Flemmie the size of a Golden Retriever. That’s the pic that made me want a Flemmie. I like to think Chewie’s holding out for a giant friend and that’s why he refuses to bond.

But now I realize it’s so far from the rest of the world I might go bonkers, so at the moment I’m also considering the maritimes (Atlantic east coast of Canada). Although my dad not so jokingly suggested my parents’ back yard (which to be fair is massive and could easily fit a cottage and a Chewie veggie patch LOL).

I have never been anywhere out side of the US….and even then mostly just up and down the east coast except for a trip in High School to Hawaii…I am so jealous of those of you that have been places….seen things….

Anyway….I swear Sage is literally growing overnight….not only in size but in bravery and the need for exploration.  Here I was thinking that I was providing her with an enriched life with plenty of activity but aparently I was wrong…
She is secretly saying….”hey mom…the stuff I get to do is great but I am capable of so much more….let me show you.”

Can you spot the naughty bunny???

She goes to the edge of the corner of the bed….and flies over to the dresser…I have no idea what made her decide she wanted to try this…but now I am trying to figure out how to stop her…I am afraid she will get hurt if she falls

The picture makes it look closer then it actually is…the dresser is actually diagonal from the bed not in line with it…its quite a distance and height….

I know I probably have a crap ton of catching up to do so I will have to get on that…meanwhile…I am currently waiting on the vet to call me and say I can come get Sage…today was her spay. I didn’t sleep much last night…dropped her off at 8:30 this morning and now I am just anxiously waiting. She is a little over 5 months now and is weighing in at 9 lbs 11 ounces….she has been healthy and happy except for the recent attitude that started to pop out…lol she kind of lost a bit of her litter habits…and has gotten very pushy!!! Hopefully that is the hormones and will calm down in a bit.

Walker is doing great! He is still acting like a 5 month old puppy…I swear I wish I could siphon out some of his energy and happy go lucky demeanor for myself!!!

Gwen is doing well…great start to her freshmen year of High School….had a little trouble adjusting to the homework load difference but she is getting there…progress report showing all A’s and B’s!!

My husband and I are finally feeling like we have ground beneath our feet again, between weather, house issues, passing around the flu and a job loss scare we felt like we had lost our footing.

I hope that all of you are well and look forward to catching up on all the goings on I have missed!!!

Great to see you back here Many, many safe-spay-vibes for (((((((Sage))))))) She’s quite a big girl already The attitude is most likely classic hormonal girl bun. It can be a while before her hormones die down after the spay.

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been having “life-trouble”. Sometimes it just piles up I’m glad things are better now.

The vet held her until they could get her to eat something. First night home I was wrapped in a blanket laying on the floor right next to her keeping her warm and giving her lots of pets….at first all she was interested in eating was her fresh herbs….she wouldn’t eat hay, pellets, veggies or fruit…just her parsley, dill, mint, basil, and cilantro. She was going to her water bowl on her own. She also got up and jumped into her litter pan to pee a couple of times but no poo’s. I was getting worried and then about an hour or two later she left a few weirdly shaped poos and one very large oblong poo. It felt like forever but we made it through the first night….I woke up to kisses on my face and she was looking and acting more like her regular self!!! She still isn’t eating as much as she used to but she is munching here and there on hay, her salads, her treats. Poo is looking more and more normal and she is even throwing around her hay ball!
I was so worried and stressed the day of her surgery and the her first night home….I am finally starting to breathe easy and relax…my little girl seems to be on the mend and doing well! She goes back to get her staples out in 2 weeks.

Thank you all for your good vibes, I will keep you updated on her healing…..and get pictures up soon.

Ah thats such good news and that she was eating her herbs was really good. At fIrst we just want them to eat. Anything! Zou’s poos took ages to get back to round little peas of hay… But they did eventually.

Keep her confined so no unnecessary stretching, jumping or binkies, however well she may seem to you now. It takes atleast 2 weeks to heal.
I kept Zou in a cage for that long. She wasn’t happy but i would rather have a bun with the hump than a bun who needed to go back to the vets cos her stitches had popped….

Keep an eye on her too that she cant chew / rip at them. And give her lots of TLC, which it sounds as if she’s getting….

The first garden I planted is still going strong and it ended up providing the only food she was willing to eat.

My dog tolerates my bun. She and my other bun could lie on the bed together. My dog is also a GSD, they’re a highly trainable breed and many individuals have a very strong sense of “flock”.

I also have an adorable photo saved of a Rottweiler and Bun sharing a dog bed.

Thanks guys! I am so proud that we got to this point…from meeting through the fence to Walker on leash now they can both be free. Sage shows no fear whatsoever…she bunny boxed him a few time early on when ever he got too pushy or in her face. Walker never showed any type of aggression, but in the beginning he would get way to excited and I was worried he was going to smoosh her…I worked with him on how to be calm around her then Sage pretty much did the rest! She would come over and sniff at him then run away…each time staying a little bit longer, then she would run around the living room binkying only to return to sniff Walker a little bit more. Now they follow each other around or lay down together for a little bit.

@Vienna: they take turns….sometimes Walker is laying on the floor and Sage comes running out of her room…she will browse around and then go over to visit Walker…she nose bumps him then lowers her head….Walker then licks her head and Sage settles down while she is groomed (I usually have to put a stop to it because this will go on until Sage is yucky wet. lol) Other times Sage will be out and about while Walker is outside and when he comes in she will already be napping somewhere and he will go join her. I am absolutely loving this…I open her little gate in the morning and she comes out to join us when ever she wants…if things get too overwhelming for her, or she gets hungry or needs to use the potty she goes back into her room.

My husband was bending over to pet Sage and Walker put himself between Sage and my husband until I said it was “okay”…my husband turned around to me and said “well I guess I see where I fit in this pack! lol”

@Reese: with a properly trained dog that listens well and time and patience as Vienna said. I absolutely think it can be done. I had a word that I used whenever Walker got to energetic “puppy play” with us humans….it came in handy with the bonding of these two. He already knew that “be nice” meant relax and back off when it came to us humans so I transferred it over to Sage and he caught on real quick. His need to herd did show when Sage would do her “Bunny 500” but with time and rewards Walker learned to just let her be until she was done.

Depending on the Dog and the Bunny I guess time and frustration level would be different, but I promise that there is nothing more rewarding then sitting down and having both my furbabies next to me on the ground sharing love and affection and knowing that everyone feels included and safe.

If you ignore her when she wants to play, she starts to get rough and bites, it hurts a LOT. If you say “no bite, Eevie” she just gets more riled up. She also only listens to commands (No, come, sit, speak, lay down, roll over, etc.) when you have a treat in your hand or if you have to yell “Eevie you’re going in time-out!” Then she gets all scared because she hates time-out. Also, when she slips out of her harness outside, she will come up to you and when you reach for her, she zooms around like a maniac and won’t let you catch her.

Eevie probably get scared becase you’re yelling, rather than the time out itself … they have a sixth sense when owner is really not happy.
So you don’t have to yell, although I know that’s what you really want to do.

If she is biting its probably teeth related, so just put a chew toy in her mouth whilst pulling your hand out !! It’s like baby, they need to chomp to make it feel nicer.
Of course if it is snapping that she is doing, that is not acceptable.

And the chase me game when they KNOW you are going to put the lead on is everyone’s nightmare. For that you need a HIGH VALUE treat to give her. Just after you’ve put the lead on….

                                                                                                                                                                                Good luck Reese !!!

Biting is not a normal behavior even within a pack unless she sees herself as the alpha. May I suggest putting your face on the back of her neck when she misbehaves and biting the skin there or her ear to let her know you’re top dog?

We let her gnaw on our hands for teething and bonding, but she is getting past the teething/chewing stage and is starting to get more energy. We take her outside and play with her, but once we go inside, she thinks we are still playing and does the play stance. When we ignore her, she pounces up and snaps at our hands then runs away as fast as she can, trying to get us to chase her. So she probably is snapping. We say no bite calmly but she still does not get what it means. As for a really good reward treat, we use freeze dried liver. She loves it! We don’t really yell, we just say it in a really deep voice and look at her and say “Eevie, do you want time out?” If she still runs away with the bad object in her mouth, we all corner her and pull the thing out of her mouth and say “You re going in time out!” in the same deep voice. (By “we” I mean my sister and I)

Q8 – I heard that only a few months back when my friend went (once) to puppy class !

I’m afraid I’m very against that kind of training, and goodness, you risk getting your face nipped surely if you were to advance your head to an excitable (adult) dog. Yes mummy dogs do that, but they have much better reaction times than us and… they are dogs.

Reese, I’m afraid letting Eevie gnaw on your hands whilst teething ( ) has just taught her its OK to do that !! She doesn’t know she’s grown up.

You are doing good by ignoring her. You should KEEP ignoring her though even when she jumps up. When you respond by saying ‘ouch’ or ‘No Eevie’, she has won. She’s got your attention.

Try completely turning your back without saying anything, EACH TIME she jumps up. And keep at it ! Don’t give in. And you’ll soon see that she’ll give up that game. ‘No-ones playing huh? Really? You sure? ‘ I’ll go and lie down. And THEN when she is quiet and in her bed you can go and give her a bit of dried liver and talk soothingly to her without getting her excited.

The thing is though in a family like yours (ie more than one person) EVERYONE has to be consistent in Eevie’s training for her to be able to learn.
So everyone must ignore her when she jumps up.

But you sound as if you’re doing fine (except for the gnawing hands apart part !! LOL) and that is the joy of having a pup – seeing it grow and learn.

I also have one last thing to say: She has only nipped once, I was just upset at that moment and had to post about something about the dog because I was frustrated that she kept on jumping up on people when she was excited, even when she was doing so well with training. She knew what “Off” meant for a while, but my sister keeps on ignoring me when I tell her to not pet the dog and and praise her for jumping up on her, and say “off” and now Eevie thinks its ok to jump and we have to start training all over again. I don’t eve know why I brought up biting or something instead of saying she jumps a lot. Sorry about all of the run-on sentences. She really is a good dog though! Ok last post
