Gus has always had access to under my bed and he loves it, but he recently discovered he can chew on the wooden slats (and eat the chips he breaks off) which can’t be good for him or my bed.

Any ideas for blocking the 20cm high gaps that run the length of both sides of the bed?  At the minute my temporary fix is stuffing 2 pillows, 2 blankets, 3 towels and 7 cushions along the sides, but he’s very good at finding and squeezing through the tiny gaps between them and I don’t think it’s a good long term solution

(or suggestions for a covering to go under the slats so he can’t see them any more that won’t be bad if he chews that too? Cardboard won’t work, it’s too big a surface area)

Layers and layers of bunny safe wood is what i hear most often that people use to keep buns out from under their beds/couches/side tables/ect

Bun buns love to hide under beds and sofas and any place that is dark, my boy used to get under my bed and was difficult to get him out and once he was out and I was about to play a game with him or something, back under he went, I blocked my bed and sofa with cardboard boxes but he learned how to push them and get through, he now has an X-Pen, he is in that most of the time, you can get the big high ones for about £20, but if you are in another country I don’t know how much in dollars that is, there are some plastic grids, nic-grids I think they are called, but can be expensive.

I might look into wood as a long term solution but I need something cheap in the meantime First off, I tried stuffing cusions and pillows along the sides of the bed. Worked for a few days but then the stubborn fellow realized if he just shoved his head into a tiny gap and PUSHED he could get through

So now I’ve taken the mattress and slats off, put an old sheet down into the frame, then set the slats back ontop of that. He’s never shown interest in chewing material (other than shoelaces) so I’m hoping that will stop the chewing at least. Will see how it goes!

I would look for these wire cube shelves:

You use zip ties and connect them into a fence around your bed. 20cm is about 8 inches, these squares are 14x14inches so it would have to go around the outside of the bed.

If your looking to budget, I’ve found these second hand on kijiji and even this weekend at a flea market for $5/22 squares.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say I used big plastic plant pots at one point, with boxes behind so he could not push through, that way he thought he was under the bed, but he wasn’t really.

All the ideas are great, just want to say to Charlie’s Angel: how crazy cute Ollie thought he was under the bed but he really wasn’t
I use an old wooden mandarin-crate to stop Bam from getting between the sofa and the book-shelf. I have to wedge it in proper though, because a determined bunny can overcome almost any obstacles. And they do tend to be determined.

I’d love to buy those (especially to make a condo for Gus) but I’ve yet to find them in Australia :/

I learned the best way to keep critters from getting into the unfriendly innards of a bed is to simply have it directly on the floor rather than on a frame.

We have put sheets of alu foil underneath the couches and the cupboards. Breintjes hates to tread on them or to chew them. See if it will work for your bunny as well, but we careful that he doesn’t swallow it.
