A minute ago, I picked up my rabbit to weigh her, and I decided to look at her feet. Her heels had a small furless spot that looked sort of red. I’m not sure if this is normal or not, and I’m not sure if I need to take her to the vet. Can someone please tell me what this is?

           Can you post a picture?

What you describe is probably caused by rough surface that your rabbit is walking on. Is your floor with tiles or wood (not good for a rabbit to walk on constantly)? Do you have carpet? In nature bunnies hop on grass and such soft surfaces.

You can consult a vet without taking the rabbit for a stressful examination. Take pictures and show them to the vet. Then if it’s neccessery you can take the rabbit. I think covering the floor with carpet or towels where your bunny walks will help.

Yes I do have wood floors. From now on, I will make towel trails to her litter boxes! Thanks! When do you think her heels will heal?

Most bunnies have some baldness and pink callouses on their heels. Sore hocks is when those spots become soft, red, inflammed, cracked, oozing or bleeding. You definitely want to keep an eye on any redness so it doesn’t advance. If they are just a bit red you can help them by fixing the problem (changing the flooring and/or trimming nails). Nails must be kept short or sore hocks can develop. Once the sores are open they are hard to treat.

Is your bunny caged or free roam? My bunny’s sore hocks responded really well to me putting in some good quality memory foam bath mats in the condo.

She was free roam, but recently I had to but a puppy cage around her hutch (She hops into her hutch to eat, drink, and sleep) so she could not poop on our beds. Yesterday I set a towel on the floor in the puppy pen. I hope her heels don’t get any worse!
