My daughter’s 4H bunny is a lion head and she told me the other day that his tooth was sticking out of his mouth. So I checked him and sure enough you could see his bottom tooth- so I made an appointment with the vet for today and took him in- she clipped his teeth and noticed that his top teeth are little nubs. She said her guess was he has a mineral deficiency and recommended he be put on a vitamin/mineral supplement which could be found at a pet store. Has anyone had an issue like this? What would you recommend and how long will it take for his teeth to return to normal? I’m guessing he will be disqualified for showing at the fair this year. (It’s in 3 weeks)
The thing that confuses me is- he’s grown really well- he seems to be eating despite the snaggle teeth. His cage needs cleaned regularly so I know he’s moving food through. And now that he has this issue with the teeth- will this always be a problem?
        Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If the top teeth are little nubs, then that would explain the bottom teeth being long. The incisors are “self sharpening”, meaning the upper teeth and lower teeth are sharpened when they come together. No upper teeth = nothing to wear down the lower teeth.

Your vet mentioned a vitamin/mineral deficiency? Like metabolic bone disease? What is your bunny’s diet like?

The only other thing I can think of is that he somehow broke his top teeth. This has happened before on the forum, where a bunny chews on their cage and gets their teeth caught.

We have three bunnies- all 4H projects- they all eat the same diet, pellets, Timothy hay and some fresh foods like carrots. The other rabbits are Polish and they are both fine- look good- teeth seem to be fine. I had. wondered about him breaking those top teeth somehow? But he’s never been dropped or gotten injured- I suppose he could have broken them on the cage. But I noticed the chew blocks in the other cages- are well chewed and his isn’t touched. The vet didn’t elaborate- her comments were that her guess was a mineral deficiency and she says maybe his top teeth reabsorbed? I have never heard of such a thing- but we are new to the rabbit world??

Agh! Stupid BB giving me an error again.

Ugh, anyway, as I was trying to say. Diet-related metabolic bone disease is caused by too like vitamin D. If a bunny is on a good diet and/or exposed to sunlight, this should not be an issue. Good quality pellets are supplemented with vitamin D and should have everything bunny needs.

If his teeth were caught and broken off, it can take a very long time for them to grow back. We have seen teeth that were broken off at the gum line on the forum numerous times. Sometimes the teeth never grow back. This is due to damage to the tooth root that occurred when the teeth were broken off. If this is the case, the only solution is to have all of the incisors removed. Otherwise, you’re constantly dealing with overgrown lower teeth.

Ugh. I was afraid of that. He’s just a young rabbit- born in March and we were hoping to show him for at least a few years. I’m guessing he will be dq’d from the fair this year but I was hoping maybe in the future she could show him

You can keep trimming the bottom teeth for awhile to wait and see if the upper teeth are growing at all.
