Korra’s left front leg bends to the right at an almost 90 degree angle. She tends to hop around more on her elbow (where the leg turns in), but is fully capable of running, hopping, and binkying (and does so often). The lady we got her from said that she was either born with her leg like this, or it’s possible it was broken when she was very tiny, before she started handling her.

Can splay leg look like this? Or do you think it’s more likely it’s an old break? She will see a rabbit savvy vet soon, and I’ll of course bring this up then. I’m just looking for ideas and possibly concerns I haven’t thought of that I can bring up to the vet.

Sorry the 2nd pic is upside down. Not sure how to turn it the right way. Thanks!

Not an expert, but I’m reading that a characteristic of splay leg is that the affected limb is externally rotated.. I can’t see clearly from the pics, but the paw looks straight?
Does she let you touch her? It could be helpful to gently touch it for bumps or lumps and to see if she can extend it or if the movement is impaired. In humans that would mean that there’s a fracture that calcified wrongly, so it should be same for buns

Her leg does come out straight from her body, just like the right one does, until that crooked section. She lets me touch it, and I feel a small bump after the crooked angle, if that makes sense. She seems to have feeling in the paw, and it seems like she can straighten it somewhat when she stands up on her hind legs and props herself against the x pen bars to check something out. But not when she’s hopping around. She always looks like she’s supporting herself on her elbow when she does that.

it doesnt look like splay leg to me, as that happens more often in the back legs than the front (in fact, ive never heard of it happening to the front legs at all, but that doesnt mean its not possible). And splay leg usually happens in both feet, not just one. With that, i would assume it was a past break or a different bone issue. If she can put pressure on it and is fine with you touching it, i wouldnt worry yet. Talk to the vet about it when you take the little bun in

Does the crooked section turn in at an angle? It appears to turn toward her body from the photos. I think splay leg generally turns out instead of in.

She is lovely. Do you know her approximate age?

It does sound like a badly healed fracture… as Mikey said, don’t worry. Surely I would ask the vet to have a radiography taken, so it can be assessed if it’s indeed a break or something genetic.

All I can think of is maybe problems when she’ll be an old lady, but since buns are such resilient little animals I’m sure she’ll be fine <3

Thanks everyone. It does turn in at an angle, toward her body.

She will be 11 weeks old tomorrow, born 6/6/16. So she’s still just a baby. I worry about it causing her issues with her back over time, and of course arthritis in that leg. But as of right now she seems to find it completely normal. She binky’s ALL the time and is very curious. She is overly cautious on hardwood floors though.

Its good that she’s so young. That lends credence to an early break or something congenital. I wouldn’t worry too much since she doesn’t have problems. I would ask the vet to look at it eventually.
