I’ve made a big mistake with my bud. I switched him from Blue Seal Bunny 16 to Oxbow Adult Basic pellets over the course of four weeks and read somewhere(and now, especially after wracking my brain cannot figure out WHERE) that he should get two tbsp. at both breakfast and dinner. He weighs a little less than four lbs. I saw on the bag last night he should be getting 1/8 of a cup and he’s getting WAY more than that. I feel so stupid and I’m worried I’ve induced some illness in him? I just can’t figure out where I read and misunderstood the feeding guidelines because I know I wouldn’t have come up with that on my own.

He has a vet appt on Monday morning so we’ll know by then. In the meantime, though, I’m terrified I’ve triggered diabetes or something in him; I just can’t believe I’ve made such a big mistake and that I didn’t catch on quicker.

In the past week-two weeks he’s been drinking a lot more(I have to refill his bottle twice a day now versus one) and his pee is almost clear and it’s super excessive. He also has a ravenous appetite. I attributed it to the heat wave we’re getting here, even though he is in the A/C 24/7 my parents were telling me it was likely he could still be affected by it. He’s had some urinary incontinence and has been behaving poorly(i.e. in the middle of the night moving his entire exercise pen around to try and get to his bags of food and bedding). His water bottle leaks a bit but the amount of his urine tells me that leaking isn’t the culprit. His bottle isn’t too big but I couldn’t say how many mL is in it. Also his activity level is fine and there’s no head tilt or anything of that sort. His stool is good for the most part but perhaps a bit darker and occasionally is only a bit squishier than normal.

I just feel so stupid and so awful and I want to see what you all think, just so I can have somewhat of an idea heading into Monday.

A little less than 4lbs is not that much different from 4lbs, and 4+lb buns should have 1/4-1/2 cup of pellets.

So: if we say your bun is at the small end of that range, and we therefore feed him the small end of the pellet range, then your 4lb bun should be getting 1/4cup of pellets – which is equal to 3tbsp… so he’s only been getting 1tbsp too much (and if he’s an active bun, that’s not a big deal at all). So it’s unlikely the pellets are the culprit.

Diabetes is triggered by sugary foods like fruit, carrots, sugary treats, so again, not likely.

And you might want to add a heavyish crockpot water bowl – well better for buns than bottles.

It might just be a mild UTI – the vet should be able to tell better.

          (((get well soon)))

A 4 pound rabbit should get 1/8 cup of pellets per day. Start cutting back on his pellets a little every day until he is down to 1/8 cup. Don’t beat yourself up about the amount you were giving him, just start reducing the amount now. It’s not always easy to give rabbits the exact amount that they should have each day. I have two rabbits, one is small and the other weighs about twice as much. I give them each a bowl of pellets, but they eat out of each other’s bowl, so someone is likely getting more than they should. Neither looks overweight, though. Make sure that your rabbit has hay at all times and a good variety of greens.
