        Hi,
I’m in love with this forum always search but have never posted.
I have a continental giant rabbit. She has a leaky left eye as her tear duct is blocked. I’ve never had giant before so not sure about their 3rd eyelid but hers have always been red. Anyways within a week of bringing her home she developed a watery eye with some white discharge. 3 months later she still has this problem. Vets have given her flushes and they just say her eye duct is infected. Antibiotics have somewhat helped but I’ve noticed now her 3rd eyelid has disappeared from her bad eye!? She’s sneezing a lot too. I’m seeing a rabbit savvy vet but in all honesty I feel like It’s trial and error. They haven’t done X-rays they’re saying she’s too young to have teeth problems. My question is could it be possible that she’s allergic to something in the house like hay perhaps? I’m just suspicious this has all happened as soon as I’ve brought her home. Vet thought it could be stress related that’s brought it on at the beginning but now she’s settled in and binkying away I just have a gut feeling it’s an allergy. Any advice would be really appreciated. So sorry it’s long.
I’m also thinking of getting a air purifier for her room as I’ve read it could help, so any suggestions with brands would be so helpful

There is no such thing as being too young to have tooth problems. I would really press for an xray and tooth check if possible. It is possible she is allergic to something, but my bun with allergies doesnt have eye problems, only nasal discharge and sneezing. I dont think eye problems are apart of bunny allergies, but im not sure if it is for some

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I’m not sure why they’ve said that. They’re a rabbit savvy vet and even recommended by frances harcourt brown. Bit confused. Do you know if you can get X-rays done without anesthetic? It stresses her out an awful lot so really don’t know if it’s in her best interest. Thank you again

              Hi Bunnylove.

              It could definitely be allergies!

When I first got Bramble she developed runny eyes. Her nose was a little runny too. Vet said stress of moving and gave her antibiotic drops. These helped a tiny bit but it didn’t go away. After a month of drops and a tear duct flush there was no change.

I changed my hay brand to a no dust Rye grass purely by coincidence and within 3 days her eye problems disappeared.

I didn’t know if this was a fluke, so I tested it. I put a little of her old hay in the litter box again and within a day she had runny eyes. I think it might be something to do with the dust content irritating them.

It’s definely worth a try, to switch up your hay and bedding. I know how frustrating eye problems become so I kinda think nothing to lose! xx
