Okay so here’s the thing. I’m fostering a lovely Bun boy who was pulled from a terrible situation. He’s all skin and bones and I’ll be glad to report his appetite had GREATLY increased since he got here. HOWEVER he doesn’t seem to want anything to do with his hay. The only reason I’m worried is since I can’t just stop feeding him pellets to get him interested in the hay since he gets calories from there and he’s so malnourished… And if he doesn’t eat hay I’m worried his gut will stop working right… So what am I supposed to do now? Is there something I can substitute for the hay right now while he’s underweight??

Do you have another type of grass hay available? I mix oat hay in with Timothy because Odette doesn’t really care for Timothy. I think she likes the oat hay because it is crunchy. She eats the Timothy, but not if I separate the two hays.

I think plenty of rabbits live on pellets alone. Pellets have hay in them and while I know that’s not ideal, at least he has a good appetite.

I don’t feed pellets to my mini Rex as he’s a normal weight but poor Thor is so underweight I can’t stop them since greens seem to upset his tummy right now

I agree. I definitely would not stop Thor’s pellets.

Hopefully someone here who is an expert has advice on how to supplement the pellets safely. I would start with a different grass hay, if available.

              I’m glad Thor found you.

If he only wants to eat pellets, maybe that’s the only food he’s ever had.  The pellet formulas can provide bunny with everything he/she needs.  My experience is that rabbits when given the opportunity, they will immediately start eating green leafy vegetables and especially will start eating grass hays. My experience with three bunnies is that when they never had oat hay to eat, when I gave them oat hay, they readily chomped it up. Oat hay is one of several grass hays.

Could you add some alfalfa hay to his regular hay?
