Hello all,  this Unique setup I’ve had in place since march of this year as it’s  the only setup that’s done the job by stopping stray poop and pee (the glass to the right is Autumn’s water). I’m wondering how I could improve it to limit litter wastage and make it more sanitary if possible. An explanation of the setup: a 1 by 2 foot clear storage box with an entry cut in the front left, with litter pellets lining the back and right side walls (where urination occurs) and with the hay ball sitting in the front toward the middle. A Picture to clarify this jargon  :

        Thank you for your time

I’ve imagined it with the lid back on, a nice rug on it and suddenly it’s a safe chillout place for the colder season + observatory if the bun is a jumper.

          Silly advice, I know

Muchelle, no that’s a good idea she does love being up high. Thanks for the idea

              oh! I was lucky then
The hardest part will be to find a way to secure the rug to the lid, so that she doesn’t fall when she jumps up. Maybe a round of hot glue?

Yep that is a problem. That or trapping the edges around the lip of the lid and closing it.

but then they would make the lid unstable and the bun could slip off…. maybe cut something adhesive to the size of the lid?

Our litter boxes are plastic pans.  We’ve bought them from Amazon/ebay.  Actually, they are litter boxes for dogs. This works for our large Flemish rabbits…somewhere between 12 and 14 pounds each.    The litter boxes are lined with newspaper and then the newspaper is covered with oat hay.  They love to jump into their litter boxes and at one end they are chomping oats and at the other end poop pellets and pee.  We change their litter boxes daily.  Our two rabbits have three litter boxes.  When we got them at about 1 1/2 months old, they had good litter box habits, at 11 months old they are really excellent. And as I said in another post, with their age and also having been neutered, they are no longer damaging the house with chewing.

Probably using some sort of screen over the litter would achieve this. Though with Autumn being a rex, you’d have to take care of those hocks. Screens can also be a pain to keep clean, depending on what you use. Using galvinished mesh like the Binky Bunny store screens means you can dump out the droppings regularly without having to replace all the litter.

You could also hang a rack on the same side as the entry and put the hay in that. Depends on what she likes. Many rabbits prefer it as you have it now so they can forage through it.

Flemishwhite- That’s a nice setup there. Yep, where there is hay there is poop unfortunately. My Mini Rex Autumn is about their age of 13 months and is a lot less destructive, but still a little destructive and certainly still a stubborn Madame

jerseygirl- That’s a good idea, I’ve seen these rounded off plastic mesh sheets where I live, I might try those but as you say I am wary of her hocks as she has just recovered from a bad case (weeping sores). Maybe give it a few months more. Do you have any suggestions for building or buying a rack? was thinking an all wood construction but it would get chewed to death.

If you’re going to put a lid on it and you want it to be more secure, turn it upside down. The top looks bigger than the bottom, so it would be less likely to tip, it would give more room inside and with the lid as the floor, it would be easier to take away and clean.

JR- interesting idea, I suppose it would! Certainly beats lugging a big box outside to clean and hose it down. Thanks for the idea

What I did for a while was I bought a big cat litter pan and used this mesh screen as others said I think it’s like chicken wire sort of? I folded that into a box I put upside down in my buns cage. I bought it at a hardwear store.

I had absorbent dish towel rags used for drying dishes on top of in it and I rung it out everyday and trashed the poop. That was my no litter solution at the time.
Now I use litter in it but I have to keep the screen because my bunny likes to eat litter. That’s just me though.

Lavendarlapin- I’ll look into that, but luckily I am able to compost all the manure and will probably grow some veg off of it as rabbit manure is some of the best fertilizer
