Ok my 9 month old lionhead bunny Max stopped eating over 24 hours ago. I did bring him to the vet today and I was given critical care food, pain meds and a probiotic. What happened is I ran out of hay and I had a bunch of greens. They eat dandelion greens with Timothy hay and pellets. That’s their usual diet and never had any problems. He is bonded to his sister Jezebel, they had carrot tops with the greens, kale and radishes with the tips. Jeze is fine but Max stopped eating the day after and he has loose stools. I am feeding him every 2 hours which is exhausting but it has to be done. Im kind of surprised the vet didn’t give him an antibiotic. Is there anything else I can do? Has anyone else made the same mistake? Im so worried about him. He’s lost a lot of weight and is very lethargic. He has been eating by syringe and he took his pain meds and the probiotic but I feel like I’m missing something. Any additional infor would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Did he already have loose stools by the time you visited the vet? How loose are they?

Antibiotics are not always given as standand practice when there is gut troubles. If the loose stools continue though, you will likely need to re visit the vet and get the stools tested. If they are very loose, you will need revisit and get him rehydrated. I would ring in advance and find out what your options are here.

Hopefully it’s just a reaction to the vegetables and will come good on it’s own. All of those greens are considered safe and shouldn’t have been an issue. But perhaps he is more sensitive then most. I do recall another member reporting kale caused loose stools for their rabbit.

You could try some infant simethicone formula (like GasX) in case there is some gas discomfort. The pain meds should be helping if that is the case, but it cannot hurt to try simethicone also. It’s not really proven how this helps but their is anecdotal evidence that rabbits have responded to it. It is also not harmful for them to have.

Encouraging hay is important. Whether it’s attempting to hand feed by offering strand by strand, or chop into little pieces and see it that interests him.Sometimes rolled oats can help with loose stool but take care to only give small amounts if you do as it’s a carb. Hay is best. If you can get him eating it!  The CC will certainly help also.
