I bought a 50 lb bag of food but I didn’t realize that it was much different from their normal food. When I opened it up it had a STRONG sweet smell that I’ve never notice with their other foods. Does this mean it’s bad for them? I know I’m always worrying.

Also if anyone knows good food that’s not expensive I would love suggestions. The vet told me Oxbow but at $50 for 25lbs it’s not very affordable when I go through 25lbs/week because of the babies

What brand is the new food?

I assume that you are talking about pellets for young rabbits, since you mentioned babies. Here is the nutritional info on Oxbow Essentials – Young Rabbit Food. They have cane molasses listed as the 6th ingredient. It looks like that is the only source of sugar. The only “cheaper” pellets that I know of are Purina. A 50 pound bag is less than $20. It’s not the best food, but it’s not the worst. I think that any “cheaper” pellets will come from a feed store, and they might not be as healthy as Oxbow or other brands that members here use.  I do think Purina contains corn, which rabbits shouldn’t have. I think all pellets contain some form of sugar. I don’t know if the brand you got has molasses listed higher or not, or if there are more than one source of sugar. If your new brand of pellets compares close enough to Oxbow, they should be okay. You are supposed to mix new pellets with the old, when changing brands.

I think it’s Purina. It looked the best out of what they had at TSC. When I get back home I’ll look more closely at it. I didn’t think to look to see what they used for sugar. Thanks for the info! I’m going to be looking for something around the same as oxbow after this bag

I have Grimm on Purina Show. It’s what the breeder recommended and my vet seems to think it’s ok, so…?

This is a useful link to compare some of the fundamental properties of different kinds of food – green means its sufficient/low enough for ideal nutrition whereas red means its outside these limits. Some purina feeds rate poorly on this.

That’s an awesome link! After he recuperates Grimm may have a food change in his future.

Q8 Theo gets Burgess excel. I think it gets a bad rep for causing poppy-butt but we’ve had no problems. I suppose its individual and all about quantity too. I feel your pain about not being able to access some great foods/toys etc for rabbits. I’m the same in Ireland. I so wish I could try Sherwood pellets.

Tried and loved Sherwood. But shipping it to Kuwait is sooo expensive… plus customs cuts the bags open to check it and so I lose the freshness if I order more than one bag.
