Hi! Mr. Bun was neutered on 7.28. he is 10 months old and was 99% potty trained since 3 months of age with the exception of a few pellets here and there during play time. on 7.15 we brought home our newest addition Ms. Daisy. Suddenly Mr. Bun was a hormonal teenager! leaving pellets EVERYWHERE and even peeing while he was out (never very large amounts and he always has access to his litter box). We knew this was due to him being unneutered and meeting his first girlfriend. Well now that he is back to his normal self after his surgery he still seems to have forgotten his potty training. He is still leaving lots of pellets in his house and when he is out. he is also peeing small amounts in random places (not close enough to his box to be “accidental spillage”). I know he is still experiencing a surge of hormones but is there anything I can do reinforce his potty training? I clean accidents up as soon as I notice them. unfortunately daisy still has some growing to do before she can be spayed (she is 12 weeks but our vet wont spay unless they weigh AT LEAST 3 pounds preferably 4 and she is sitting right around 2 pounds at the moment).  Daisy sleeps in a separate smaller cage for now (vet said still keep them separate for 4 weeks after his surgery) and I have been keeping them fairly close to eachother as I didn’t want to upset them since they bonded so quickly. Should I move her out of sight? Can I re train him?  help! mommy is tired of sweeping up a hundred pellets every hour!!

Okay we finally had to take his bed out of his house because he had turned it into a litter box basically. peeing A LOT in it and leaving a million pellets in it. I love my boy but mommy is getting extremely frustrated. and I’m feeling like a guilty mommy because I have to take most of his blankets out during the day while I’m at work so they don’t sit and let pee soak into his house floor. I have moved daisy farther from him but still in sight and it doesn’t seem to have made a difference. I would love to give him his bed and blankets back but can’t keep up with the clean up. HELPPPP

It’s only been a few days since his neuter and it can take a few weeks for boys to recover from their crazy hormones. You need to be patient. This, along with a new bunny in the house, has made him go into turbo-territory mode. That’s why he’s peeing and pooping all over. All you can really do, in the meantime, is to try to encourage potty use. Give him another potty and try to let him pick the location. Wherever he poos and pees the most, put the potty there. And make sure it’s a nice size that he can lay down in. Put hay in his potty as bunnies love to eat and do business at the same time. This will encourage him to spend more time in the potty.

His litter box right now is large enough for him to lay in (which he does alot!) And his food bowl and hay are positioned so he is standing in the litter box while eating. But I didn’t think to try giving him another box! I know it’s his hormones but I’m worried he might forget his potty manners for good! It’s affecting how much free roaming time he gets and mommy feels bad for taking his bed away since he keeps soaking it. I’m going to try putting amother litter box where his bed used to be and see if that helps remind him! I keep telling him once he settles and daisy gets spayed he better calm down! Thanks for the advice!

It probably won’t lead to long-term issues, but he may need a refresher once his hormones have calmed down. Neutering makes everything go haywire immediately following the procedure.

thanks for reassuring me! I had read about the post neuter craze but I guess just wasn’t prepared! He’s not really acting differently (chewing or thumping or anything  like that) just his potty habit is crazy. I just have to hope he will settle back into his habits after a few weeks so he doesn’t ruin his house (his floor is plywood covered in cheap sticky tiles covered by blankets). and I would LOVE for him to have as much free roaming time as he used to but its just not possible with him making a mess everywhere! I guess mommy will just have to stock up on paper towls and get used to sweeping for the time being!

The post-neuter craze effects each bun differently. You never know what you’re going to get!

Well we have officially gone 2 days with no pee in his house (still a lot of pellets) but haven’t made it with no pee from overnight yet. I’ll take that progress! luckily its only his potty habits- his personality hasn’t changed a bit!
