I have a male and female that are bonded. He is neutered but she is not spayed (lack of vet in my area). They were separated for 3 weeks after the operation (vet said to do this) but now I’m fairly sure she is pregnant. I have separated them but made sure they can see and smell each other. Im scared and have no idea what I am doing. She started nesting and running around with a haystache yesterday. I put a small box in the cage i put her in but I don’t know what else to do. Any advice? I dont want to ruin their bond.

Also..do I confine her to the small cage or should I put it in the playpen area and leave the door open? The cage is the largest cage you can get at petsmart. The normal one they share is a large NIC condo.

Ah what a shame! If the vet had advised an additional week or more separation and this could have been prevented.
Still, I’m surprised by how many vets don’t advise separation at all if the female is stil intact.

These are some very information articles on accidental litter:

Is she building the nest in the cage? I think it should be fine to allow her access to the pen. No need to confine her. The rabbit mothers often only visit the nest to give a feed or a quick check. As they get older, it’s important the mum has an area she go to have some space away from the litter but still be able to access them when she chooses.

How long is it since his neuter now?

Ava used to have false pregnancies before she was spayed. We knew there was no chance of her being pregnant, but she’d run around like mad, making nests. Then it’d pass and she’d lose interest. So I’d suggest a vet visit to make sure she’s actually pregnant.

As above I think a vet visit is in order.

My rainbow bridge rescue bunny Terri was a unaltered Female, she used to nest all the time & have false pregnancies, but Gareth had been neutered months before so there was no chance she could have been.

This was during one of them, she was looing for a nesting spot:
