I got up early this morning to call in sick to work, I have been working sick the last few days and just couldn’t do it any longer. The bunnies sure are being annoying this morning, making lots of noise, detaching their litter tray and pulling it about their pen, somehow managing to pull the curtains through the bars of their pen and eating a bit, just generally being really irritating. They don’t normally behave like this, and I am never normally annoyed by them but I guess being at the end of my tether being ill was just making what normally wouldn’t bother me that much seem really irritating. I gave them a telling off and had a look at facebook on my phone.

Facebook informs me that it is one year since Ron came to live with us! When I think about the shape he was in back then compared to how he is now I have instantly forgiven them for being a little annoying this morning.

Poor Ron was overweight, had been fed cheap multi coloured food and kale by his previous human (and as much of it as he could eat too) and looked like he had never been brushed. He wasn’t toilet trained and didn’t seem to know what hay was for even although I did see he had hay when I picked him up from his former home.

We had Bramble for a little over a year when Ron came home. Bramble had been happy as a lone bun until our work circumstances changed and we weren’t at home as much. Another bun seemed the logical thing to do and we started looking for a spayed female. I found an ad online for a bunny, a neutered male and his story was so sad. He had been given up by his first owner and taken in by a girl and her room mate, she had him neutered and generally tried her best to care for him. Then something happened and she had to move home which meant moving out of the country, she couldn’t take poor Ron so the room mate kept him. He was unfortunately unable to afford the flat himself and was having to move back in with his parents who had two big dogs that would not take to Ron so the poor guy was up for adoption. Barely even running it past my partner, I was in the car a few hours later to go and collect him.

I arrived at the flat where I found the poor bloke really upset about having to give up Ron. We had spoken at length about how I would bond Ron with Bramble and they would live together in Bramble’s massive pen and have full run of the house when we were here (Bramble is a terrible chewer, cannot be left to roam unsupervised so is always in his pen when we are out or sleeping). I had showed him pictures of our set up and explained how we would adapt it to house two bunnies. He felt it was the best thing for Ron.

I went into this flat fully expecting to find a happy, healthy, well cared for bunny. What I found was a ball of fluff with matted fur on his rear end, a room full of poops and piles of hair everywhere and a bunny that did not want to be caught and put in his carrier. The cage he had was falling apart to the point that I didn’t even take it home, it stayed in my car and went to the tip the next day. The poor thing was in some state and I was determined to help him. I knew bonding two boys might not be easy but I also knew I couldn’t leave this poor guy.

I got Ron home and set him up in Bramble’s old baby cage that we had kept for some reason. It was far too small for Ron but it was going to have to do him overnight as by this point all the shops were closed for the day. Bramble instantly started going off his head, thumping and everything! I swear Bramble had never thumped before that day, I honestly didn’t think he knew how. I spent some time brushing Ron, trying to get the mats out then left him alone for the evening.

Next day we went to the vets and the vet said that other than obviously needing a right good brush and being a little overweight, Ron seemed to be in reasonably good health. We brought him home and it became clear that Bramble was getting distressed by this new bun being here. I had planned to keep them separate for a few weeks, let Ron settle in but it was distressing Bramble too much so I brought the cage in to the same room and Bramble was desperately trying to sniff ron and play with him.

I set up a blanket on the floor in the hall and let them meet, it went so well that we set up the new pen we bought and left them to it. Within an hour they were best friends and within a week they were living together full time.

Today Ron is a normal weight, gets brushed regularly (and occasionally groomed by Bramble) eats good quality nuggets and veggies and as much hay as he can eat. He took to toilet training really well all things considered, although they both took to pooping on their new blanket last week. The vet is really happy with his progress and Bramble is so much happier having someone to play with.

Happy gotcha day Ron! Thank you for coming into our lives.
