This is my first pet bunny, and my first time posting on this website. I am EXTREMELY worried about my rabbit. She has been showing some strange behavior since Sunday after I cleaned her cage. I got her in June when she was two months and she has recently turned 3 months old. She is a Holland Lop, and her name is Sprite! Since Sunday, she hasn’t let me pet her, every time I open her cage and slowly reach my hand to pet her she runs into her hide out space. I was just able to pet her for a little bit but she usually lets me pet her while eating and such, but not even then will she let me pet her, I also just noticed that was kicking at her food with her front paws and then put her paws into her food bowl and continued to eat her food with her paws sitting in there. She acts as if I am some monster now! And we have had some bonding moments! I honestly have no idea what happened! This morning I woke up and she pushed her water bowl off of her little platform! Is something wrong with her? Please only answer if you know EXACTLY what you are talking about, thank you!

She sounds like a completely normal bunny to me. This is something many owners of baby bunnies experience. Their sweet and cuddly baby suddenly doesn’t want to be held and/or pet anymore. It’s as if a switch was flipped. The change happens that fast!

What you’re witnessing is probably a combination of things. First of all, enough time has passed now that she’s probably feeling much more relaxed in her new home. Depending on personality, relaxed can equal sass. Second, she is becoming more independent as she heads toward the “teenage” stage. And finally, she is a dwarf breed which means puberty can come quite early sometimes. Hormones make girls do things like exhibit territorial behavior.

Hi payton and welcome to the forums!

No one here is a vet, and even if we were vets, it’s not possible to say exactly what’s up with a bunny without actually seeing the bunny.

However, we have heard about cases like yours before, here on the forums. In a 3 month old girl rabbit, this feisty, aggressive and/or fearful behavior is consistent with the start of puberty. In quite a few bunnies, especially females, this can happen like if you’d flipped a switch. It’s not a health-problem, it’s all about hormones. There’s really nothing you can do about it except be patient with her. Her mood will be like a roller-coaster for some time now. She’s too young to be spayed yet of course, but you can start planning for it, f ex by trying to find a good rabbit vet to do the procedure.
