        Hi everyone,
I adopted my Netherlands dwarf around a week ago, he’s four months old and neutered. Before he came to me, he lived with a territorial unspayed female. I checked his coat yesterday and found a large scab-like thing protruding from his skin. It doesn’t look like an abscess or anything, and it isn’t visible unless you pet him and feel it. I haven’t seen it myself either. There’s also a little black area near his neck that he seems to scratch from time to time. He’s acting totally normal and eats and drinks regularly. I’d do a thorough check but he doesn’t let me touch him yet. I’d also take him to the vet, but it’s very expensive where I live and Id take him if it was absolutely necessary. I thought that they were possibly injuries from the female that he was living with, and that they’d heal over time. However it’s been a week. What do you guys think?

I saw that you hadn’t gotten a response, so hopefully you check back and see this. If it’s an injury, there could still be a scab after a week, especially if it was a deep bite/scratch.

My first advice was see the vet, but if that’s not possible, I would monitor the areas carefully. What we do with humans in health care is measure a wound and document color and any other features- you can also take a pic. Then recheck it every day. Any signs of growth, swelling, discharge, heat- you must take your rabbit to the vet. Also if he is reacting as if the areas are painful or has a decreased appetite, change in behavior- those would signify something is wrong.

I hope he heals up just fine!

I agree with Dee. Just want to add that I’ve dealt with scabs on my bunny Bam after un-successful bonding sessions, and they take quite some time to heal even when there’s no inflammation or infection, just a dry scab. If it seems to be healing you just leave it be, checking it every day like Dee says (taking pics is really a big help, memory is not at all reliable). And expect it to take 3 weeks for it to heal, or even longer.
