        Hi

We have two rabbits bubbles and squeak , we got bubbles first and he enjoys being petted. We got him squeak as a friend and after a difficult bond they finally became friends in January and have been fine since. we got squeak they had a fight and they got separated for 3 months she got spaded picked her glue away and I had to put her in this t-shirt which she hated. Since then she hates humans put my hand near her she runs away, pick her up she struggles and breathes really heavy. She appears to see us as a threat since her operation . just wondered if there is anything we could do to gain her trust again.

        Thanks

How long has it been since she was spayed? Rabbits can experience hormonal imbalance after de-sexing, and for girls, this can last for up to 6 months or so after the spay. During this time they can be extra aggressive, fearful, territorial and also more sexually interested.

This must of course not be differentiated from physical pain or discomfort. Is she eating and drinking and pooping like she should? Does her wound look alright? (I’m not really suspecting pain, but you should make sure.)

Buns can hold a grudge, but this seems to be sth more.

Tbh when I think about it she has always been a really nervous bunny around humans. I wonder if something happened to her at the pet shop. If I pick her up she starts panting really heavy. She is terrified like I was going to eat her. I have had rabbits most my life and never met a more terrified rabbit. I don’t think it helped with them fighting as it was hard to stroke them when they were separate. We have always just put up with her shyness and thought she will come round but she hasn’t. She had her operation in December. We have a boules indoor rabbit run 2.8m x 1m of i put my hand over to stroke her she will let me if I open the door she runs into the corner terrified.

I have started seperating them for an hour a night and spending a hour with her but I dunno if it is making it worse. We would never get rid of her because her and bubbles get on so well now.

Any tips on how we could get her to enjoy being petted would be great. I think we need to treat her like a new rabbit and spend lots of time with her maybe.

My best advice is to spend lots of time on the floor. Let her approach you for pets and attention. Make sure to always approach her from the side when petting, not from above, like a predator. Hang in there. My beloved Bridge Bun, Olivia, was a pet store rescue and was super nervous of people. She was super nervous of other rabbits too. It took well over a year for her to enjoy being pet. I had her for 8 wonderful years and while she relaxed a lot with me, she always remained a nervous bunny. We loved her as she was.
