When we got Timber the shelter trimmed his nails before we left. (They also offer free trimming, but taking him there in the car wouldn’t be kind to him. I think it’s mostly to encourage people not to declaw their cats, but they offer it for everyone.) So we trimmed his nails for the first time this evening, after a little over a month. It went as well as could be expected. He doesn’t like to be held so keeping him was the hardest. But also, he has black nails and small, fuzzy feet. Is so hard to even find the nail and see it clearly. Getting to his dewclaws was really hard. I had to guess a bit for those. I just took a bit off each nail, since getting him to stay for more wasn’t going to happen. The clipper I have has a stopper that helps you not cut off too much at once, so I just cut off that much each time.

I’m not sure I cut off enough. Seeing the quick in his nails is hard. How long would they have to be before the quick starts growing longer in the nail. They may not be as short as they could be, but I think they are at a reasonable length now.

While he was there we combed off the last vestiges of his molt, the area around his rear. I was afraid he’d be super mad when we got done with all this, but after a little treat he seems his regular self.

Then our buns are really similar Kuro is VERY squeamish about having his nails touched and half of the nails are black… the rule that my vet gave me was to cut until the nails are shorter than the longer hair on his paw. Half of the times I have to lay him on his back to get to all the nails correctly, even if afterwards he enjoys his short nails =.=

A tip for black nails is to use a flashlight to see a quick. Kind of hard to hold a flashlight and nails clippers but I’ve found that a little keychain sized flashlight works well.

Thanks, Muchelle. I think I got them about right, then.

Thanks LPT. I’ll have to try that next time. Although, getting to the nails wasn’t easy as it was. It’ll probably get easier with experience, though!
