Hello everyone. I am a bit worried and was wondering if anyone wouldn’t mind sharing their neutering/spaying stories or just listening. I dropped Harvey off at the vet this morning around 9am. I received a phone call around 12:40pm saying that his surgery had gone well, and he was waking up. I later was told around 4pm that he had not eaten or had a bowel movement yet, and the vet wanted to keep him overnight. I called back asking if I could maybe bring some of his favorite greens, his own food, or treats to entice his appetite. The front desk transferred me to the kennel lady, then to the pharmacist, and back to the front desk only to be told no. I know there’s not much I can do, but I am worried about GI stasis.

This can happen, and it’s understandable that you’re concerned, but it’s standard operating procedure for a rabbit savvy vet not to release a bun unless he’s eating and toileting post-op. I don’t know why they wouldn’t let you bring in his favourite noms to tempt him, but in terms of GI stasis, he’s in a place where gut motility drugs can be administered early in the game just to get him started with pooping and eating, so there’s no reason to think that things will get serious. Chances are they want to make sure he’s fully alert after anesthesia and eating pooping unassisted before he goes home with you – and in some buns, that can mean overnight recovery at the vet’s.

Do let us know how he gets on, and I hope your furbaby is back home with you soon. (((be well, little one)))

Wishing him all the best, I’m sure he’ll be right as rain soon enough. Some bunnies don’t like to toilet in strange places, but just as likely is that because of the operation, things have just slowed down a bit so his body will take a bit of time to get things going again. He is really in the best place, but it is a real shame that they wouldn’t let you bring in his food. I would personally go there to visit anyway and take some of the favourites with. I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t be allowed to visit a pet while they’re recovering from surgery if you can’t bring them home.
