Today I was holding my bunny, Eddie, in the yard. He jumped out of my arms and landed on the sidewalk. I picked him up and realized he was bleeding. I looked at his foot and the nail was bent to the side. It’s not quite broken off and he was walking on that foot still. The bleeding stopped a minute later and we washed it off a bit. My parents won’t let me take him to the vet so I want to know what I should do now. Should I clip it all off? It’s still pretty attached but bent crooked to the side. HELP!!!

No need to worry too much, if you have animal nail clippers, and it seems to be causing him pain I reccomended cutting it off very quickly, and having some cornstarch or paper towel near by to stop the bleeding. Or, he may just lose it on his own. Is it still attached?

Yeah the nail is still pretty attached. The base is attached but the nail is bending to the side. Do I cut it all off?

Another thing you can try is just cutting the nail short, and letting it be. I’m not sure how experienced you are with rabbits, but his nail bled because when he fell he cracked his nail on the part called the quick, which is where the blood vessels and nerves in his nail are. Like the pink part of our own fingernails. What you want to cut is the dead part, so it won’t hurt him. Does he have light or dark colored nails? The quick will appear pink in light colored nails, but you might need a flashlight to find the quick in dark colored nails, just shine it through and you should see it.Again, I don’t know how much experience you have so sorry if you already knew all this! If you need clarification on anything don’t hesitate to ask !!

Hey Mk! Sorry I forgot to post this…but Eddie’s nail fell off without us even needing to do anything to it. There was no blood and he doesn’t seem to be feeling any pain! Thanks for the help!
