hi! so im planning to be away from home for a week and cant bring my bunny. there will be someone to give him food, hay, and water while im gone but he wont be able to get his exercise time. ive left him before with my brother the most 4 days with no exercise and he survived with no behavioral changes. i need opinions on a week though. will a week of no exercise be detrimental to my bunnys health? his cage is big enough for him to hop once back and forth and stand up. thanks in advance!

Hey melaik! I’m not a complete bunny expert, but I think your bunny will be fine. When I leave my bunny for a week he seems to be perfectly healthy when I get back. I bet that as long as your cage is big enough for him to run around in he’ll be fine. Hope this helped at least a little!

That sounds like a small cage. So your rabbit really should have a lot of out of cage time for exercise. It is recommended that a cage be big enough for a rabbit to take 4 hops from one end to the other. Can the person who is coming to feed your rabbit, stay there for a little while every day and let your rabbit have some exercise? This person would need to know how to handle rabbits and be able to get him back in the cage easily.

I agree – your cage is way too small. Putting it simply, the reality is that a rabbit needs to excercise in order to keep their GI function in good order. Buns who couldn’t move around sufficiently have been known to go into stasis. Stasis kills. Fast.

My suggestion would be bunnyproofing a small room like the bathroom and leaving your bunbun in there, OR adding an x-pen type extension (attached to the door of your current cage) as a temporary run during the time you’re away. Be creative. Your little furbaby will thank you for it.

he cant go out of his cage while im not here because im the only one who my bunny is comfortable with. hes an easily scared and kind of aggressive so no one in my house including myself is too comfortable having him out while im not here. i have a makeshift xpen which i have to set up everytime i let him out. my parents do not want to be bothered doing this while im gone so my only option is for him to stay in his cage while im away.

Any chance you could get him a bigger hutch before you leave then? Pet store type hutches that only allow for one hop or so are dangerously small.

If not, then at least teach your parents about GI stasis so they can monitor your bun closely while you’re away.
The animal shelter I volunteer at lost a lot of buns to this because of their being too confined over holidays, etc. It sounds like you care about your bunny, so I imagine keeping a close eye on him is something your parents can do, if only because they, in turn, care about you?

thanks everyone i figured things out and convinced my parents to let my brother bring my bunny to the bathroom to run around at least 1 hour a day. i just have to teach my brother how to pick my buns up and get my bunny to be confortable with him in a short amount of time. my brother cant for the life of him hold my bunny to and from the bathroom. he can pick him up and set him down easily so we got creative and got a box so my brother picks my bunny up, puts him in the box, covers it with a towel so he doesnt jump out, and then drags the box to the bathroom. this is the safest way i can think of! is this ok or will it stress my bunny out?

Do you not have a carrier for your rabbit? That would be more secure than a box. The top loading carriers are especially good for rabbits, but any carrier could be used for your brother to transport your bunny back and forth. That would be safer than if he tries to pick up your bunny, since they can be easily injured if they struggle.

It really would be nice if he had a larger cage or if you got a regular x-pen for him.

                        Hi Melaik!

I did this once. When I have to be away for holidays I take my Chito to a boarding place, but due to space reasons he’s not able to get his daily exercise. I feel really bad about leaving him for long, but there’s nothing else I can do That being said, when I get him home, his tummy would usually be a little sad, so I have to proceed with a hay-intense diet for a week or so before reverting back to also giving him a bit of pellets and veggies so his tum would return to normal first. I suggest giving your bun some Bene-bac before you go just in case the lack of exercise or incorrect diet (if he has a lot of treats bc everybody is a sucker to those big, begging eyes) stresses him out, then a ‘detox’ when you’re back home.

As for the method of getting him in and out of the bathroom, I agree a carrier would be best. But if you don’t have one, a box would do until you have one The main thing is for your brother to not stress him out while loading/unloading him in and out, bc Chito gets upset about that :”)

                        Good luck!!
