Hi, I’ve recently bonded my female bunny with a male rescue bunny. They did the first week at the rescue centre, and they’ve been home for a week now. The male bunny is still frequently honking and mounting the female bunny, he’s spraying wee and smells musty..
I’ve read a lot about this being common in unneutered buns, but he was done in April at the rescue (she was neutered in December). Is this normal? And will it all reduce?

I’m a new poster, but have used this forum lots for advice up to now!

From what i know and have experienced, that very abnormal. Did his papers come with a receipt for his neuter? Can you call and ask the vet to be sure? If he has been, some rabbits go through hormone phases on and off, even after being spayed/neutered. These phases usually end after a week or two

Thanks for the reply – there was no receipt, but it is a reputable rescue centre, and they told me that he was a wee sprayer before he was neutered but that had stopped once he had been, so I do believe them. I’ve tried to check for a scar but it’s tricky to see. Maybe that’s just his personality? Fingers crossed though that it is a hormone period!!

              *update*
Today the bunnies are very separate -there’s no sign of any fighting, and they’re both relaxed but just seen very indifferent to each other. They’ve lived together about 2 weeks now in restricted space – they’ve not been big snugglers but do normally spend a lot more time together. Have we taken a step back?

Sorry about a new question so soon, I’m worried about doing anything wrong for them!

I ask because sometimes its hard to keep complete track of every animal in the shelter, and maybe they thought he was neutered when he wasnt, but a rabbit who looks just like him was. If he still has testicles, he probly wasnt neutered. If he doesnt have them, then he probly was neutered. You can always go to a rabbit certified vet and ask them to double check as well, if he doesnt stop spraying after a month or so

As long as they are sprawling out and relaxing together, it means they still like one another. Relaxing and self grooming is a sign of being very comfortable around one another, even if they are far apart
