I took my bun to get spay today and brought her home about 3 PM. It is now nearing 9 PM and I’m really worried about her. The vet told us to make sure she eats right after surgery, but she won’t eat a thing. This is really worrying me, especially because they told us to make sure she eats right when we get home. I’ve tried to entice her with all her favorite foods and even some of her favorite treats but she acts like its not even there. I put it right in front of her and she just turned away. Its been about 6 hours now and she still looks dazed, her eyes are only half open, and she’s just sitting in her cage. She looks pretty uncomfortable because she usually lays down on her side but she is just sitting normally. I think this could be from the pain of the surgery, but the vet told us not to give her anymore pain meds until tomorrow. I’m really worried and not sure what to do, please help!

Keep her warm. Maybe put a light blanket in with her, or a heating pad. Especially female rabbits may not eat for a while after their surgery, but make a pellet “slurry” just in case to syringe feed so she has a little something in her tummy. You can make that by pouring warm (not hot) chamomile tea (with no additives) or water over about 1 cup of pellets and then syringe feeding it to her. Maybe call your vet and see if they have any tips. If she hasn’t eaten before morning, get to the vet.

All luck with you. Hope she feels better.

I agree with Cinnybun. Don’t go to bed unless she’s eaten sth. It is common for bunnies to not want to eat after a spay, but they MUST eat or their system is at risk of shutting down. If she won’t eat even the yummiest sprig of cilantro or parsley or some other favorite, you’ll have to syringe-feed her. You can make pellet slurry like Cinnabun says although a whole cup of pellets sounds like a lot to me, I’d go for a table-spoon -you can make new mix tomorrow if she still isn’t eating.
She likely feels uncomfortable. But since you don’t know the exact dosage of pain meds she’s had, you’ll have to just wait until tomorrow before you give her more. Bunnies tolerate rather a high dose of Metacam, i.e. a higher dose per kg body weight than cats or dogs, not all vets take that into account.
Keeping her warm is key, as Cinnybun also already has said. A hot water-bottle or a heating-pad or if she accepts sitting in your lap with a fleece blankie on her. Painkillers lower body temp as a side effect + buns that have been under have a tendency to become hypothermic.

She is also had some diarrhea recently. Should I take her to the vet? I know that diarrhea can be deadly and now I’m worried even more.

I say at the very least give the vet an immediate call. They can answer your questions and you’ll know if you have to bring her in or not

Like Meketaten said, call the vet and ask them what to do. They’ll likely tell you whether you have to take her in or what to do.

Did you give her painkillers? Is she perking up?

Keep us updated. ((((Vibes)))) for your bun.

She FINALLY started eating without having to syringe feed her. We called our vet but unfortunately she was out of town. They told us to keep a close eye on her and if anymore diarrhea then to take her to an emergency pet clinic. Luckily, she hasn’t had anymore diarrhea and she is beginning to act more like herself I think it might be that she was in too much pain to do anything because about half an hour after giving her the pain meds she started eating a little bit by herself and pooping normally. Thank you all for your help!!!!!!

So glad to hear she’s eating and pooping! Pain absolutely can make a bun unwilling to eat.
