So, to start, Linus is my first rabbit and is about two and a half years old and I’ve had him since he was 8-9 weeks old. Almost a month ago we experienced GI Stasis for the first time and having to deal with that. I caught it early, though, but still ended up with a very, very expensive vet bill and a terrified me. Not to mention the poor stress my baby went through.

That night, Linus was acting really lethargic and listless and refused to eat or drink. Y’know, the general GI stasis symptoms. Once he got home from his 3 day hospital stay he recovered quickly.

All of a sudden tonight he is acting funny. I keep him in an enclosure that is a small cage connected to an exercise pen at all times and then in the evenings I open the pen and he has free roam of the dining room, living room, hallway & kitchen. All tonight he was fine, binkying a little bit and stretching out on the floor like normal(didn’t appear to be trying to press any gas out) and was in a good mood and then all of a sudden something sorta spooked him. May have been the exercise mat I use to block him from going behind the TV or fireworks in the distance outside(although he hadn’t reacted earlier this evening to them) but then he was back to normal. He peed and pooped a lot I noticed shortly after and for the past hour or so he’s stayed back in his cage and isn’t super interested in food but seems to have been drinking. He seems angry at me for some reason as he keeps blocking the opening of his cage with his box and I’ve shut the exercise pen twice and both times he’s leaped out of his cage to tell me how angry he is that I’ve done that by chewing at the bars. He ate some cilantro that I gave him but unfortunately we ran out until tomorrow.

His litter needed changed so I gave him fresh a moment ago and am waiting to see if he produces any more stool, but in the meantime I’m terrified.

I wanted to give him simenthicone just in case but I didn’t think ahead and need to buy the liquid form and actually wanted to check on here for a good brand, etc. All I have right now is the Gas-X gel caps which I’ve never given him and am not sure they’re safe. I haven’t had any issues with stasis or gas before June 11th of this year.

I forgot to mention I took a nap today and missed his feeding time for pellets so my dad gave them to him and there was a lot of dust in it when I woke up. My dad knows to give him a handful of pellets but I’m not sure he knew about the dust so knowing that Linus ate a good bit. I still gave him some more though(didn’t quite think it through. Today has been very off for me) I wanted to make sure he got the proper amount. Maybe he is just full on pellets? He’s eaten a few pieces of hay off the top.

Sorry this is so wordy, but I’m scared of a sudden decline in health overnight. It is 3:30am here now and both of my parents are in bed and I don’t have my license yet.

Do you think it might just be a mood or is he sick?

4AM update: Just went and sat with him. He flopped on his side and let me pat his belly which didn’t feel bloated or overly soft. He’s still being a dork who will let me pet him for a few seconds and then move, but he nibbled on a few leftover pellets in his bowl and a crunchy piece of hay. I’m probably just being paranoid but I’m a high anxiety person and hate when I don’t feel like I’m in control of a situation or at least am working through it.

Some bunnies are like cats, they let yu stroke them, then when they have had enough they will go, bunnies have meal times and should not be missed, yes he must eat his hay, but if he stops eatting get him to a vet ASAP, I left my bunny too long and it cost nearly £100 to sort him out because he ended up being an emergency, if you find he will not take his favourite treat from you its a Bunny 999 (911)

Like BB says BUNNY 911 – If your rabbit hasn’t eaten or pooped in 12-24 hours, call a vet immediately!

If hes not used to having extra pellets, that could have upset his tummy a little bit. As long as he poops by noon he should be fine. Keep encouraging him to eat and drink, and massage his tummy when he wants/lets you (((((vibes)))))

The brand of simethicone that I use is Infants’ Mylicon. I hope that Linus was just in a mood last night and that he is eating, pooping and acting normally now.

I’m so sorry for never replying. For whatever reason when I refreshed the page just now is the first time I’ve seen any sort of response on here. Thank you for all the replies! He was fine; must’ve just been in a mood.

I’m glad to hear he’s fine!

For the future: Gas X gel caps are fine for rabbits, but if you have capsules you need to empty them and feed oly the contents because a bun can’t swallow a capsule whole. Gas X gel caps have simethicone in them and that is a med that isn’t taken up by the body, it only acts locally in the GI canal. It’s often effective for gas in bunnies, so it’s good to keep in your bunny first aid-kit. There are many brands, any type for human babies is fine.
