I left for a weekend to visit some friends and I left my rabbit, Gizmo with a friend for 3 days to babysit him (she has done so in the past and it has always run smoothly). This time though when I returned on Monday I noticed Gizmo was behaving oddly since he was not very friendly towards me like usual, he wanted to sit in a corner and he was curled into a ball. I assumed he was just protesting me leaving for a few days. When my friend who had babysat returned from work that night though she told me he had not eaten anything or drinken anything all weekend so I was immediately worried knowing this is a huge deal with GI Stasis. So the next morning (Tuesday) I got him into the only available animal hospital after calling my preferred vet as well as many others within 30 minutes away. The vet took X-rays and said he had GI Stasis (makes sense if he didn’t eat for 3 days) along with a bit of gas but nothing extreme. She decided to give him a shot of fluid to hydrate him although he wasn’t very dehydrated she said, so he must have been drinking some amount of water. She sent me home with enough Meloxidryl to last him 3 days. She also suggested completely taking away his pellets, leaving only hay, leafy greens, and feeding him critical care. I could not get the critical care until yesterday morning and have fed him a few tablespoons since then (it is now Thursday). He has been eating LOTS of veggies Tuesday, some Wednesday, and a lot today. He refused to eat any hay no matter what I did until today. Since the vet visit I have hardly seen any poop from him, some liquid cecotropes as well as a few mushy fully digested poops. Today, I called back this morning explaining my concern over the small amount of poop and requested she put him on some form of gut motility as I have read many rabbits with GI Stasis receive those from their vet. She prescribed Cisapride and I gave him his first dose 2 hours ago and about 30 minutes ago I started to hear his tummy making lots of noise. I put my ear close to his belly to listen and I can hear the sloshing that I believe is his stomach working to digest his food, but I am concerned about the loud noises I can hear coming from him. I am sitting 2 feet away and can hear them often. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am wondering if it is gas and I need to give him a bit of the infant gas relief I read about in a few of these forums, or if this is typical for a rabbit recovering from GI stasis? He doesn’t really seem to be in pain, maybe a slight amount of discomfort, but not like when I first came home a few days ago. Please fill me in!!!!!

The rumbling noise is indicative of gas. It can be very painful for the rabbit. You can give gas drops (simethicone). It’s often very helpful. You can give 1 ml every hour for 3 hours, then ,5 ml every 2-3 hours.

You can do a very light tummy-massage somewhat like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnuxGLa2reg Do NOT massage if his tum feels hard/distended. Call your vet asap if it is.

It’s very good if you can make him move around a bit. He might not want to, but it’s actually the best thing for getting gas out.

Would it be okay to give that to him in addition to the pain medication and gut motility medication he is already on? Would like to get him relief ASAP, if you’re unsure I am planning on calling his vet in the morning if his tummy is still making noises. She knew I had been giving him some of that prior to bringing him in to see her and she did not tell me to continue with it. It’s not making the noises as of right now.

The simethicone formula is safe to give. It’s not taken up into the bloodstream.
              healing {{{vibes}}} for Gizmo !

Simethicone, like others have said, and perhaps some bunny tummy massage to ‘get things moving’ a bit? Vibration works, too. Really well. I used this octopus shaped scalp massager on Remy when he had stasis (the top of the octopus, not the arms), in addition to the medications the vet gave. After starting the vibrations against his tummy, he got better considerably faster, and loves tummy rubs now.

He is okay! He is still on Cisapride and eating quite a bit, definitely more gay than he ever ate before this whole thing! He still is not pooping very much, more than before though. I gave him the simethicone and that seemed to help with the gas. His tummy was very hard before and has now become much more soft and seems to be feeling like it used to to me. I am concerned about the lack of poops (he’s passing an excess amount of cecotropes). I am checking in with his vet tomorrow as well!

I’m glad to hear that he has picked up some. The lack of poops may be due to there being not much food in his system, now that he’s started eating well again that should change. Very happy to hear about a recovering bunny Let us know what the vet says regarding his poops.
