I’ve got a 6 month old flemish who has a single splayed rear leg. Sadly it went under her instead of out, so she is really having a hard time getting around now. I’m looking at having it amputated (waiting at the vet now for their opinion) but im posting to see if anyone else has dealt with this with the larger bunnies. I’m afraid of how she will do after and her quality of life over all. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. This is my first bunny – I’ve owned all sorts of exotics and dogs, but never a bunny. Sadly I didn’t notice her leg until after I got her.

Most animals generally fair better with a rear amputation than a fore one. There is often more weight carried on the front (think of a bunny hopping forward and catching all that weight). It may take him some time to become accustomed to hopping again, as he may hop a bit lop-sided for a while, and he certainly won’t be able to jump as high (something to consider if you have steps/levels in his cage setup), but there is no reason he can’t do well without that leg. Then again, since he’s not using it anyway and it’s only getting in the way, he’ll probably do better without it there.

Interested to hear what your vet says, let us know

We have a member called guineapig724who has a Flemish that had to have one of his hind legs amputated. She hasn’t been on in a while, but you can PM her, maybe she’ll see it.

Here is a web-site dedicated to the care of disabled bunnies, you can check out splay leg and limb loss under “Education”:

In general animals do very well without one of their limbs.

              Thanks.

The vet has some concerns with how big she will be (she’s only 6lbs right now), but feels she will do ok. I’m going to be calling other vets within a few hours of northern VA/DC today to try and get pricing… The vet here wants over 2k to perform the operation which just isn’t feasible.

I’ve done a ton of reading on the disabled bunnies site as she had issues since I got her.
