chewing earphones (suggestions wanted)

Ok, I will be frank, I am sick to the back teeth of my earphones being made unusable by being chewed. I know, bunny proofing but how am I supposed to bunny proof something I wear anytime I am listening to music, working etc. (huge music listener)? I can conceal wires, I can wrap stray wires in towels, I can even shield some wires (just unscrew plug, thread on spiral concertina steel tube and screw back). but option A is not possible, B is too impractical, and C I am not able to do due to the complex welding of earphones. Paying £7, or $9.41 for US folk every time they get destroyed (every month roughly) is dangerous to Autumn, unacceptable and an utter waste of time, money and quality tools. It is impossible for me to not use earphones around her as I live in a small space. Do you have any tricks that you use? All suggestions welcome

Have you tried any anti-chew spray at all? Or, alternatively, you could buy a pair of wireless headphones that are bluetooth-enabled so there aren’t any wires for her to chew at all. A little more spendy, but if you’re constantly buying new headphones, a pretty sound investment in the long run.

No, it’s hard to obtain here but I could try it. I am a little dubious though as she loves to eat anything accept meat, even hot sauce (failed attempt at protecting a wooden bed)! Unfortunately as a lover of cassettes and other old media the wireless would not work sorry to seem negative but thank you for the suggestions.

I had this problem with my electrical cords and I ended up getting a plastic bendable tube thing (not sure what it is called) from the home improvement store in the electrical department. The plastic is hard and flexible, so you could try this. The bunny will still chew at the plastic but your cord will be protected. Its not very pretty, but it only cost a few $ and beets having to keep paying to replace your headphones all the time.

@AD – I can only think of putting the hi-fi up higher so that the wire starts high and comes down to your ears and does not come down to bunny level at all
(this cunning plan is of course no use if you are laying on the floor playing with bun at the time…)

I have to do this with lawnmover wire which would pass periously through the bunny patio area…. so I’ve put hooks up along the wall and I hang the extension wire through them so it goes way over her head (ha hah!)

I’ve also does this for my ‘new’ expensive remplacement computer cord (*tut*) in the kitchen (once bitten, twice shy!!) goes up onto the fridge and back down the other side onto the kitchen table… it no longer drags along the floor, even in an area that I (incorrectly) thought bunny didn’t go …. gggrrrrrr

Hope that gives you an idea….

I understand the frustration!! I’m not sure it’s dangerous for bun though is it?
Are headphone wires the same as speaker wires? (I’ve never electrocuted myself when installing extension speaker wires)

Vienna Blue In France- yep, usually I play/use my laptop, ipod, cassette Walkman, turntable at my desk, to high for my little destroyer but when I use these when in bed (watching a movie, writing, relaxing etc then all it takes is one slip of concentration and BAM she’s sliced the cable near my ear. It is dangerous as she actually consumes the wire, once she ate half the cable 😮 when I was away (never happened since, I am more careful now). Thank you for your suggestions and your effort. I guess I may have to treat this like buying litter pellets every month (about the same price  )

My suggestion would be just to stop using ear phones. You said you can’t because you live in a small space, but I’m afraid I don’t really get that. If you’re just listening to music or watching something as a normal volume, it shouldn’t be a problem

Either that, or get a piece of flexible slotted tubing that just slips around the wire. Or you can buy clear flexible tubing and cut a slit in it yourself. I did that with my laptop cable. The tubing can still be chewed, but it gives you a chance to notice the chewing before any damage is done. I have multiple holes in my tubing, but none in my laptop cable

Azerane- small space as in its not possible to go elsewhere to use earphones. I have annoying neighbours that complain about the slightest sound from my room so speakers are not an option unfortunately. I guess I will have to make do replacing them as tubing cannot be fitted to ear/headphones due to the crook in cable where it splits to each ear. “I can even shield some wires (just unscrew plug, thread on spiral concertina steel tube and screw back). ” I am not able to do due to the complex welding of earphones”.

No worries, I can see there is no option here, I hoped there may be but that’s the way it is I guess. Thanks for comment

We use aluminium foil to guard our wires against chewing. It’s also great to block off areas where your bun shouldn’t go, such as underneath the couch.

Some wires we just can’t hide, such as the footpedal-cable of my sewing machine. Aluminium foil wrapped around it seems to do the trick. Just wrap it around loosely and then compress it tightly around the cable so the foil wrinkles.Our bunny absolutely hates the foil and won’t chew it or step on it. He hates the sound *loud thumping* and the mouthfeel of it. We’ve dubbed it “nope-foil”

I think the bluetooth option is worth another look. There are a lot of adaptors available for older systems. Is there an aux input on the turntable?

Alternatively, you need an alert system for when shark bunny approaches the bed.

Brilliant !!!! (if it works for all bunnies….) I must admit if its the same taste as the hard metal bit around the old fashioned pencil which had the rubber in it on the end… it’s yuk !!!

I would have thought there would be a new/old Bluetooth option…. anything is possible these days !

I woke up this morning to find the ear buds chewed off my earphones, despite putting them in my shirt sleeves and under my pillow. I will try tinfoil on my last pair. so freaking annoying!

Ouch, she’s really a bun with her mind set on destruction. Best check regularly if she doesn’t chew and swallow the foil. Small bits shouldn’t be harmful, but large chuncks can cause a blockage.

Ellie, she is very much so. in fact I have never known such a difficult rabbit as her… I’ve known over 20 in my time. yep, will keep monitoring to make sure that doesn’t happen.

You’ve got a very simple way to avoid it : your rabbit is forbidden to go on the bed when you are using hearphones on it and when you are not using them, you put them out of reach. I had the same problem you have – Aki ate 4 pairs in a row when she was a baby. I even remember I bought new one after she ate the first pair, I plugged them into my computer (the system unit was on the floor), she ran up to it and cut the cord so they lasted maybe 20 seconds XD. I was torn between laughing and being really mad. Living with rabbits in a small space forces you to keep your room really tidy and to get very creative when it comes to damage control. I lived with 2 rabbits in a 14 m² room for 5 years and they found new ways to be naughty even when I thought everything was bunny-proofed (Aki likes electrical cords, Pandora liked zippers, ALL of them, and books). I finally moved last year, now my rabbits have their own room which is a relief.

Aki, simple in principle, very difficult in practice. it would mean I would have to pen her, which she HATES, she gets angry and then depressed and dejected. I have tried it and I never want to see her like that again. Don’t get me started on zips! she has destroyed two computer bags, a jacket, and all my clothes have holes even though I keep things of the floor she’ll find a way to get at them [sigh]. I guess I am the one to pay by giving her the best life I can, it grates on you sometimes when all you get is destruction and standoffishness. Thank you for your suggestions.

Ellie, thank you. Many people around me have got fed up of me, saying I should get rid of her and things to hurtful to speak of on here. Haha, if she were a meat eater she’d kill anything in sight! At first I thought it was a symptom of a deeper problem but it seems its her natural temperament to destroy everything (literally- floors, walls, clothes, bed sheets, all wooden furniture, wires, bags, paperwork, zips, mattresses, paint and I could go on). I don’t know anyone (real life) who would put up with such disorder, even from a cat or dog or anything for that matter! Not to seem big headed, just observation.
