Hi! I have two New Zealand whites, boy and girl. Since the day the doe gave birth to the kits, we decided to separate them for a while to avoid unwanted babies. They’ve been separated for 3 months. I transferred the doe to a small cage and started feeding her pellets. Once we are out of pellets, we feed them greens and the doe loses weight when we feed them veggies and fruits but the buck maintains its weight. Is it because she’s stressed of how small the cage is and they’re both separated? Well actually after doing some research, I already put the doe with the buck but I am worried that it might stress the doe a bit if the buck forces to mate with her. I am so confused they’re about to turn 1 year old next month and I want to celebrate it with none of them being ill. PLEASE PLEASE help. Thank you.

That is 99% likely to happen. Please don’t put them together when they are not desexed.

Pregnancy has likely taken it’s toll on her. It sounds like she needs to be on unlimited pellets and hay for a while. And especially now if it’s possible she is pregnant again.

Are you able to get her checked out by a vet? She may have had an underlying condition.

Can you set up bigger enclosures for them both? Some exercise pens maybe? New zealand whites are big bunnies that need lots of room.

They need to be neutered and I also agree about bigger quarters for them.  New Zealanders tend to be PBB’s.  (Pretty Big Bunnies).

We allow our bunnies to free range through most of the house.  Our Flemish rabbits were a problem from about 2 months to 6 months with chewing.  After neutering and with age… 9 months now, their chewing is not  problem.  They get their chewing exercises with oat hay.
