        To start!

I have four rabbits. Each two are paired up with each other. In x-pens. In my office which is known as the rabbit room because only 5% of the stuff in here is mine. Two males, two females. All neutered and spayed. I have been a rabbit slave for over 6 years.  I like to think i am well versed in the care of rabbits.

Well. I am sick with a cold so i went to bed around 3-4am in the morning yesterday due to erratic sleep schedule. Get waken up about 10am by my boyfriend who holds up a feed bag. Says, “I did something stupid.” I look at the empty 40lb feed bag and i think, “Did he buy some feed instead of the wood pellets for the rabbit litter?” But instead, he tells me that while at the local Flea Market, he saw a rabbit in a tiny wire cage and bought it from a seller. He explains that the above that cage had another cage sitting on top of it, and filled with baby turkeys pooping on top of her.

Since I have moved here to live and be with my boyfriend here in SC, he has learned and spent time with my own rabbits to develop a weakness for them as i do. He told me that once he saw her condition, it didn’t matter that she was pregnant, he had to get her out of there. Now, i took her out of the feed bag and i put her in one of my plastic travel carriers while i sat up an area for her to stay at.

Now, i ran out of x-pens but i do have an extra dog crate for emergencies. It is a MidWest Life Stages Folding Metal Dog Crate 42-Inch w/Divider. Dimensions are 42L x 28W x 31H Inches. It has been setup with a bowl for water, a litterbox with a mixture of carefresh and wood pellets, and a mixture of timothy hay and alfalfa hay. I have also put in a cardboard box inside for her to hide in when she wants to hide.

She has drank water and used the litterbox as well as ate plenty of hay. She has flopped a few times and seems to have relaxed a bit. Now i am not sure that she is indeed pregnant but i assume she was bred by the seller prior to being sold. I am unsure of her age but i estimate around 1 years old possibly. Now, when she has recovered from her ordeal and done being pregnant, she will be spayed, no doubt about that.

My boyfriend and I are still talking about what to do with the babies when they are born. Help. D:

Thank both of you so much for taking her! What a sad condition the previous owners had her in The next step now is getting her to the vet as soon as possible to make sure she is indeed pregnant and to make sure she is otherwise healthy. Her set up sounds good for now, but youll want to add two more things if she is pregnant. Youll want to add another semi small box for her to start her nest. Adding a bit more bedding for her to throw around might not hurt either. Next, make sure babies wouldnt be able to escape from the cage after they get old enough to wander around. You can start with fleece wrapped around the bottom covering a few inches so they can wiggle through the cage bars, and should they try to chew it, it wont effect them as badly as other fabrics and such

When the babies are born, you leave them to the mother for the most part. Youll want to check on everyone every once in a while to make sure no one is too stressed and to make sure their poops look pretty normal (kit poops can vary in size, shape, and color so itll be worth reading up on that so you know what to look for when checking on the small buns). Should she die during birth or should she refuse to nurse the kits, youll want to have some kitten replacement milk on hand. Theyll need to be syringe fed every few hours, should it get to that point. After they get a bit older, they can be given alfalfa hay and weaned off the milk. After they are about 2 months old, you should be able to have them adopted out to friends and/or family

I believe Rabbit.org has more baby/kit information that might be worth reading up on

Not sure what I can say that would be of help, but I do want to say a huge thank you to your BF and to you for saving this bun from miserable conditions and doing what you can to offer her a good life.

The first step I would take once she’s comfortably settled is to take her to the vet for a welness & pregnancy check, spay scheduling (if appropriate/possible), and doses of spot-on parasite meds (anti mites and fleas) and dewormer.

If she is pregnant, you could start making inquiries in advance at no-kill shelters, or advertising and screening prospective bunny parents for the kits-to-come.

So glad you were able to get her out of that terrible situation. ):

Because we are a house rabbit forum, most of us are not too educated on the care of mums and babies. The first thing I would always recommend would that you bring her to a vet for a checkup-your vet can advise you on how best to proceed. (:

As previously noted, the House Rabbit Society has a page that might help you. http://rabbit.org/domestic-baby-bunnies-and-their-mom/

Managed to scrounge up a few x-pen panels to attach to the dog crate to give her a little more room. I have set up a nest box filled with carefresh and timothy hay to be ready. So far, she has not given birth or pulled out fur. I due my best to try not stressing her out as much as I can.

In case anyone is curious. She is a medium sized, albino white rabbit with pink eyes. I am hesitant about taking her to the vet right now. Should i wait until she has given birth or before? If before, will the car ride induce labor? Anyone know?

Random fact. She inhales romaine and cilantro like air. Munches on them like crazy. She definitely loves them.

Better to go to the vet before she gives birth to ensure she is actually pregnant and to make sure shes not sick. If she is sick or carrying anything, you could accidentally transfer it from her to your other rabbits through contact

Another update! She was indeed pregnant because i found six little pinky babies in her pen. Cleaned up the blood stains on the sheet on the floor of her pen. Babies are in the nestbox in a mixture of tissue paper and carefresh. They are wiggling and adorable.

Also. She has been seen by the vet and has been given the green stamp of health approval. She is healthy and fine. So are the babies.

This little girl was very lucky your bf bought her home in time for her to give birth in a warm and clean pen. Its great the vet has seen her too. Healthy vibes now for mum and babes, have you thought what you are going to do with them all?

Haha Gina.Jenny, shouldn’t that be “has your boyfriend thought about what he’s going to them all”?!

Arson, thanks for the update. Good to hear everybun is ok. I witnessed one of my rabbits giving birth and tbh, it was not pleasant! This mumma bun will be feeling so much better now. Make sure she’s getting plenty of protein.

Wow, what a story. I am thankful they are with you.  LEL is right that we do not have a lot of information about baby bunnies/pregnant does – though there are a couple of members that are more up to speed with this and may come by.  In the meantime, here are some resources that you may find helpful.

                                  Keep us updated!

Well here is some clarification for those who may be wondering. We intend on keeping all the babies. We’ll separate them once they are weaned by sex but they’ll remain side by side with each other.

Bad news. We lost one of the babies this morning and one other is very sick and unlikely to survive. The remaining three are fine and dandy. My BF believes it’s the result of inbreeding. Don’t know her history prior to her rescue.

I tried to feed it critical care but it wouldn’t even chew. Just laid there. Trying to keep it’s eyes open. So BF and I talked and we both felt we didn’t want to see it suffer anymore so we took it to the vet who confirmed that it was beyond help. So. They put it down.
