I got my first bun about two and a half years ago from the SPCA and I had her for about a year and a half then I got a new bun that was about 4 months old. they bonded instantly and have been best friends for a little over a year. the one I’ve had longer is a girl named hoppy and the other is a boy names Zeus, both of which are fixed! they’re literally BEST friends! hoppy doesn’t let me brush her and I’m pretty sure she’s part angora because her coat is HUGE and it gets matted really bad. so I’m forced to take her to the vet to get shaved about twice a year. we’ve been doing this for a long time so Zeus, my other one is not completely freaked when he sees her short coat. I brought her home today from the vet because she just got shaved and for some reason, when Zeus goes near her or even a foot away from her she FREAKS out and starts thumping and running away then Zeus feels the need to chase her and I just yell ZEUS then he runs under my bed like normal. I’m very concerned because I’ve never seen Hoppy get so scared before ESPECIALLY from Zeus, her best friend. any thoughts? i don’t know what to do!!

Likely her smell changed, so when he thought he noticed her, he smelled her and thought it wasnt her. Its not uncommon to pick up random and abnormal smells from the vets office. They should be fine and back to normal after a few hours. You might want to separate them for the time being so she can get her normal smell back

well it’s her that’s running away from him, I think it’s because he’s trying to groom her and it feels SO different because all of her normal fur is gone. I have to separate them because it’s only getting worse. will it be bad if I have to separate them for a few days? will it break their bond?

If you separate them but keep their cages close to one another so they can still see and smell one another, it should not interfere with their bond If it does for whatever reason, rebonding them should go fairly fast
