        Hi guys,

Luna finally got spayed yesterday, and thank goodness she’s not abnormal like Venus who was born without reproductive organs………
I still love them both equally regardless.
        Anyways,
when venus got spayed she seemed sad and out of it for the night but bounced back the next day mainly because the vet prescribed us Metacam (is that how you spell it??)
HOWEVER, Luna wasn’t prescribed Metacam so she seems like she’s in a bit of pain and she still seems depressed/out of it and I feel so terrible because I don’t know what I could do for her… I threw away the Metacam Venus had a week ago while cleaning out my room because I thought they’d prescribe Luna one too…
Unfortunately both my bunnies happen to have gotten spayed when I’m also at my peak with stress from exams, Venus was spayed when I was dealing with midterms and now Luna has been spayed when my finals are fast approaching. SOO I’m really worried and its adding onto the stress. Luna just sits on the blanket I have in their cage in bunny loaf position and doesn’t move much… I put some hay in front of her so she could eat but she doesn’t seem like she has the appetite. I tried putting water in a small cup so she could drink but she doesn’t seem interested. I tried giving her a warm bottle, but she just moves away from it

What else could I do to make her feel better???? Should I call the vet and ask for the pain meds?

Also, this is totally unrelated but could somebody please answer my “bunny travel” question in the House Rabbit forum PLEASE. Nobody is answering it and I really need some advice.

Imo, you should call your vet and ask for pain meds. It has been scientifically established that bunnies that get pain meds after a spay heal quicker and with less GI complications. Pain can lead to loss of appetite, gut slowdown and stasis.

If she doesn’t start to eat soon you’ll need to syringe feed her. She can’t be without food. You can use a mash made of pellets soaked in water. If she gets some food in her, she’s likely to perk up a bit. If it’s been more than 12 hours or thereabouts since she ate sth last, please mention that to your vet when you call for pain meds, they might want her to come in and get sub-Q fluids etc.

You should definitely call the vet and get some pain medication. Whatever they gave her after surgery would have worn off by now and she is very likely in pain. Females should get pain medication for a few days. A spay is invasive surgery.

I’ve never traveled with bunnies, so I can’t help with that.

I’ll try calling the vet today. I gave her some parsley last night at around midnight so she can have some greens at least in her system. She ate the greens gleefully. I also grabbed a handful of hay this morning and left it in front of her before I left to class. She seemed to be eating it a lil bit (she’s picky so she only eats the hay she “likes”). She sort of came out of her cage this morning right before I left to class and looked around which was great, but I feel like she doesn’t have the energy to eat the hay in the hay rack by herself. I’ll head back home after my next class and put some more hay in front of her.

She still looks pretty depressed tho this morning maybe a lil dopey too.
She seems like she’s pooping a lil bit but they look dehydrated and funky….

You might need to syringe feed her water to make sure she is drinking. If you dont think she is eating enough, add a few crushed pellets with water so it turns into a liquid goop and try syringe feeding her that. Poor little bunny (((((healing vibes)))))

I’m glad she’s pooping and eating a little. Try to get some more food in her -parsley and other fresh herbs like cilantro and mint often sparks an appetite in a bunny. You can dip the sprigs in water just before you serve them to her so she gets some water in her.
It’s good that you’re calling your vet. They must’ve just missed the pain-killers somehow, since You got a pain-killer for Venus.

I called them and they told me that she doesn’t need the painkillers and I’ve also asked yesterday when I went to pick her up if Luna really doesn’t need painkillers.
The convo went something like this:
me: No pain killers for her??…
The nurse: yes she doesnt need them
Me: you sure??… like really sure??
                    The nurse: yes no need.
                    Me: okay…
The nurse: just make sure she gets water and don’t let her run around for 7 days.
                    Me: okay.. got it…

I had cleaned the cage while waiting for the vet to call me to give me the okay to pick her up and I left alot of water in their water bowl too. I don’t know if she’s drinking but she is definitely eating a lil more now (THANK GOODNESS).

She seems a lil bit more active now too. She is in some sort of pain or maybe discomfort. I can tell because she doesn’t really seem comfortable, but she hops around a lil bit and uses her litter box. I don’t want her hopping around too much so I always lead her back into the cage when she comes out. (I can’t close the door of the cage because venus is free range as well)
She is pooping but instead of dry ones now she poops lil wet poops. They aren’t mushy just looks a lil wet and slimy. I can tell she had her gut slow a lil bit probably this morning because I saw this really big poop in the litter box that looked like 3 poops that tried to come out but got squashed together. BUT now all her poops look decent shape and size. They are still a lil bit wet and slimy looking… is that bad?
I give her parsley as wet as I could too because I’m not sure if she’s drinking water so I wanted to make sure she gets some water into her system.

Poor bun. Hope she feels better soon. ((((Luna))))

I think it’s awful when vets don’t prescribe pain killers after a spay. It’s a pretty big surgery.

I also think that it’s awful for a rabbit to not have any pain killers after a spay. Maybe you should ask the nurse if you could speak with the vet. I bet that nurse wouldn’t have a hysterectomy without any pain medication.

My rabbit didn’t get any pain meds prescribed and she looked sad for a few days but was still eating relatively normally and bounced back after a few days. But if your rabbit is not eating or drinking, definitely go talk to your vet ASAP.

The poop-irregularities are due to her having been under + not eating as much as she normally would. That is normal and should right itself if she starts to eat and drink better and move around a little (no big physical efforts though). It’s good that you’re keeping a close eye.

It’s sad about the pain-killers. If you can get her willow leaves or twigs, willow contains salicylic acid and that’s a natural and mild painkiller. Perhaps if there’s a tree somewhere around you you could pick some leaves, willow trees as a rule aren’t treated with pesticides because they’re naturally resistant to pests.

I live on a college campus so there’s not willow trees around or at least I don’t think so. I’m also pretty bad at recognizing trees haha…
She’s feeling a lot better right now I think. She seems to be hopping around a lil more and eager to eat.
I was worried about her poops a lil bit since they looked so soft and wet…
I feel like they are slowly getting drier tho so I think that’s a good sign.
She does still spend alot of time just sitting on the blanket and looking a lil sad.. which breaks my heart.
I can tell she’s not feeling great. I wish the vet gave me some Metacam for her…
Thank you for the healing vibes tho

                              On a totally unrelated note:
I’m not sure if Venus is shedding or they are fighting (which I have not seen at all today while keeping an eye on Luna)
It seems like Venus had this chunk of fur that was pulled out possibly or falling out so I got worried that they were fighting or something.
Which again I haven’t seen all day. I didn’t even hear a peep of any aggressive behavior.
Is it shedding season?… I’ve never seen my bunnies shed…

                                Update on Luna:

She’s happier today and is willing to hop around more. She doesn’t seem like she’s in much pain anymore but won’t allow me to examine her belly…
She’s eating normally and I’m pretty sure she’s drinking water.
She seems tired still and sleeps a lot but Venus always keeps her company. BUT when I come out with treats they are overly excited so I try to be extra careful so Luna doesn’t mess up her stitches… She’s starting to lick and pick at it so I have to clap or yell so she stops…

Indoors bunnies can shed at any time, but the big sheds are generally when it’s getting hotter (that’s why there are no rabbit shows in the summer). And they can shed in clumps of fur and even get bald spots, it’s still normal. But Luna could be feeling cranky if she’s in pain, so she could’ve nipped Venus perhaps.

Licking and picking at the stitches is so very indicative of pain and discomfort that it’s a bit weird that your vet won’t give her any. I’m wondering why she can’t have any, if it’s the blood-thinning properties of Metacam or the possible GI side-effects they fear or what. If she keeps being unduly interested in her wound you should get her an E-collar so she doesn’t rip the incision open at night when you can’t monitor her. You vet might sell E-collars. Call them and ask, tell them she’s obsessing about her stitches.
