So yesterday I took Madeline to the vet because I believed she might have a minor respiratory infection (she had been sneezing and grinding her teeth, but her poops were normal and she was eating). When I visited the vet he told me he very rarely does rabbits.. maybe four a year and that she seemed healthy but since she had been sneezing he gave me TMS in liquid form to give her. He told me to try it for 3 days, if the sneezing doesnt stop then call back. I am to give her 1 CC ever 12 hours. The vet gave the first dosage in his office and when we got home I noticed Madeline was very sleepy and her poops were clumped together. I was worried but went to bed hoping she would be better this morning. When I woke up this morning her poops were no longer clumped up, they were normal and she is eating and drinking fine… but I have noticed a bit more discharge around her eye. I am wondering if its the TMS breaking up the cold and working or if she is getting worse? Before she was showing little crusties around her eye but they were dry, this morning there were little balls of wet goup (it wasnt a lot just a little bit, but they weren’t dry like they were before).

Is this normal or should I get back to the vet? If she didnt have a infection is it hurting her giving her this medication? She is 10 Weeks old.

Does the bottle tell you the strength of the medication? How many mg per ml?

TMS is also used to treat coccidia so it’s not unusual to use it for young rabbits.

It might be a progression of what ever is affecting her rather then a reaction to the antibiotic. However, I think it is a good idea to ring the clinic and let them know. They will know about adverse reactions to look for.

Could there be anything in the environment affecting her? Do you use any wood products in her habitiat? Scented litter? Room deodorisers?

It could be the antibiotic working. As long as she’s eating and pooping as she should and doesn’t seem lethargic, I think it’s ok to give for 3 days. All antibiotics mess with the GI microbiota though, so keep a close eye on her poop.

It’s more common for bunnies to get Baytril (enrofloxacine) as first choice for a cold/snuffles/respiratory infection. But TMS is listed as safe for rabbits.

I am using critter care for her litter and it is the natural kind. I have an air filter in her room also which should be pulling any impurities out of the air. I was using stove pellets for her litter before but I decided to take them away because I wondered if the dust was causing the sneezing. She was playing and running around this morning, I was just a bit concerned about those eye boogers. They werent big but I mean she hasnt had them be gooey before so I am hoping the TMS is helping. If she is worse at lunch today when I get home I will call the vet again. Hopefully she is better.

What about the hay? Is that a bit dusty? If she’s a bit clogged up, the eyes may not be draining away as they should. Which could be why you’re seeing some goop build up. You can wipe it away with a wet wash cloth. Bunnies love their eyes being groomed. You can also hold a warm, wet washcloth against the eye with light pressure. Sometimes this helps unclog the ducts and it feels nice for them also.

I bet the hay is a big part of it. It is dusty now that I think about it. It makes me sneeze too, I cant believe I didnt think about this! Should I be shaking it out before giving it to her? I will also try the warm cloth to see if that helps her. Is it hurting her at all to keep her on the medication in case it is indeed an infection?

You can lightly mist the hay with water. That can help if dusty. If it’s timothy hay making you sneeze, there are other types of grass hay you could give her. Orchard grass, bluegrass, bromegrass, oat hay.

I shouldn’t think the 3 day course of antibiotics would hurt. Did the vet weigh her to work out the dose? It best to stick with what the vet prescribed. If she becomes ill (not eating, lethargic), then ring them for advice or go in for a follow up.

I just re-read what you said about poops clumped together. Do you know what the cecal poop looks like? That’s like a mini bunch of grapes and they’re shiny. That’s normal. If her normal poops (Fecal)were clumped, that might be because her gut wasn’t moving as fast as normal or she had some fur going through her system.

Yeah they weighed her. She weighs 4.4 lbs and he said 1 cc every 12 hours should do it. He originally told me to keep her for 5 days on it, but if she didnt get better in 3 then call him back or try to switch the litters. I just dont want her to be hurting and I took her in to the vet because I noticed sneezing and that she has never laid relaxed since I brought her home (2 weeks ago), she is always in the meatloaf position.
