How much hay should I be feeding my Holland Lop ? I have read unlimited amounts, but is there anyway of measuring out that amount to what I should be feeding him daily ?

Rabbits should have unlimited access to hay. You do not need to measure how much hay they eat, only to ensure that they are getting enough. I also like to refresh their hay daily with a new handful because rabbits are foragers and will pick out the best pieces first and might not eat as much if they “think” it is old or already sorted through.

I read somewhere that it should roughly be the size/ half the size of the rabbit. That’s probably not the best help, but monitoring your rabbit is really the best way to ensure that she is getting the daily fibre she needs, and is at her healthiest.

HCB is right when they say that rabbits get picky. I can think that the buns will like certain types of stalks, but they just may not eat it, and if the hay is untouched, it’s not a good sign. I also mix old with new hay. Something about the smell…

Thanks everybody for the responses, I have gotten the bunnies and now watching them everyday on their eating habits, I am concerned they are not eating the hay I have got for them , and its 50 lbs of compressed Alfalfa/grass hay that I got from Tractor Supply. So i cant just go get more or try something else. I have it in a hay rack for them that i have zip tied to the outside of the cage because I had it in the cage but they kept getting in it urinating it and pooping in it so i moved it to the outside of the cage, but anyways they are only about 8-9 weeks old so is it that they are still young so they do not eat that much but its been a noticeable
issue that they have not eaten a lot on a day to day basis even though I have only had them about a week. Please help

I have no experience with bunnies (vs. rabbits, which I do know about). I would probably start a new thread explaining extra details of the situation, so you can get more feedback.

Rabbits like to poop and eat at the same time. It’s a good practice for litter box training. I have a haybag but I also daily change out the hay in my rabbits litterbox, and you will kinda go through hay quicker, but it’s better than having rabbits with gut problems.

You can put a wad of hay in one corner of the litter-box and see if they’ll eat of it when they go to the toilet. You can hang hay from the cage roof in a metal hay-ball, they might think it’s a fun toy and they won’t pee or poop on the hay.

I suspect the main reason that they don’t eat a lot of hay is that they get lots of pellets. Try and cut back a little bit on the pellets and see if they’ll eat more hay.
