Hi, I’m new to this! I have a 10 week old bunny, Oliver, which I’ve had for two weeks. He loves his unlimited Timothy hay, eats his Timothy based pellets (oxbow), and likes the occasional treat of 1/4 baby carrot or other veggie. Lately I’ve noticed lots of Cecals in litter box, floor, and in a grass hay tunnel. I haven’t seen him eat them either. I did cut his pellets out for one day and the next day no Cecals were found, but I’m worried he’s not getting the fiber he needs then. He’s as bouncy as always and still loves scratches. I haven’t noticed any change in temperament or coat quality. Help me please

This is a common issue with young bunnies on a rich/unlimited diet designed to help them grow. There will be extra cecals that will go uneaten. This doesn’t mean he doesn’t eat some of them. People don’t often witness them doing it because they will do it at night, but if you see your bunny “grooming” his rear and then come up chewing on something, then that was a cecal.

If the problem is simply diet, then he will likely outgrow this once he begins transitioning to an adult diet around 6 months of age.

Thank you! Helps me calm down to know it’s pretty normal

Yep, I wouldn’t be worried unless the cecals stick to his rear. If they are causing a “poopy-butt” problem, then you might want to consider making changes to his diet. Otherwise, it usually isn’t an issue.

Just wanted to say this is reassuring to hear. I’m on a similar boat with a nearly 5-month old bunny not eating a lot of his cecals. I also feed adult hay (timothy/orchard grass) and timothy-based pellets. I didn’t think it’d be smart to cut the pellets yet because he’s so tiny and doesn’t seem to eat an excessive amount.

Also, I witnessed him begin eating a cecal– it fell out of his mouth and that was that lol. He just ignored it once it was on the ground.

Very reassuring! I started watching him even more closely and he does eat some, just not all. Glad to know this wasn’t just my bunnies weird thing!
