If you’ve seen my thread in the Lounge, I am currently considering adopting a pretty big boy. He’s about 10-12lbs and we’re not sure if he’s fully grown or not. NZ or Flemmie. The plan would be to bond him with my senior, Bindi. Just wondering if anyone has any stories or tips on bonding with a big bun? Do you find big bunnies more laid back during the bonding process.

Would love to hear about your experience.

LPT! I am also getting Winnie a much larger friend here come July! It will be flemish! I have no experience yet, but I have asked several Binkybunny members who own flemish giants and smallers buns. They have all said that size does not matter, and flemishes are called “Gentle” Giants for a reason I was worried at first cause Winnie is only 3.7 pounds and the flemish is going to get wayyyy bigger then that, I thought that the flemish could easily crush Winnie. But Someone said that I actually will have to worry about winnie with the flemish, said that little buns can make there way around and under big buns and bite :0 I have literally done so much research on owning a flemish and bonding it with my Wittle Wabbit that the Billion worries i had about the two wabbits and the bonding process is now down to one worry and that is the flemish eating everything including Winnies food, Ive just decided im going to have to watch Winnie closely and make sure she is eating all her food. I had so many doubts at first but now I am for sure getting flemish. Also, I have had a couple people tell me that bonding with a flemish is alot easier due to the fact that flemishes are more laid back and docile then most other breeds. I hope you get one too…We can share our flemish bonding stories )

That’s great! Thank you for sharing! A new Flemmie, how exciting for you!!!!

Yes, bonding is def stressful. I had done some bonding with my boys (Bindi and my Bridge Mini-Rex Stormy). Bindi is about 5lbs and Stormy was about 3.5 lbs. After a lot of tension I got them bonded to the point they could spend several hours together in the living room. Sadly, my Stormy was diagnosed with cancer shortly after and passed away.

If I get the big bun, I’m really hoping the bonding is easy and there is a mutual affection. I’m not willing to put B through a lot of aggression and stress bonding. He’s 9 years old and I think he would benefit from a friend but not going to stress him out or risk him getting injured.

My wife now wants to get a little rabbit.   We now have two Flemish sisters.  They are not yet 9 months old and weight about 12 pounds..I don’t think they are pure bred Flemish, I think they are part New Zealand, although one sister has a definite Flemish looking face. My wife would like to have a smaller rabbit because they look like a baby rabbit.

I wonder what the Flemish girls would do if joined up with a tiny rabbit. I remember that our previous rabbit, Bunny, 8 pounds, when we first got her, our grandson had a hamster and when we introduced them, Bunny started licking the hamster. I think she thought it was a baby.

              ………………………………

About Flemish rabbits being docile and calmer because of their size.  OK, I’ll agree with this, with qualifications. Flemish may be docile because of their large size, but also because of their large size they can difficult to handle if agitated.  Rabbits have a powerful kick that is much more forceful than you’d guess for their size.  Snowy, the biggest Flemish sister, is very friendly and outgoing…but she doesn’t like being picked up.  Pick her up, carry her, and then start to set her down, with both of my hands under her armpits, she will start powerfully kicking..lacerating my forearms.   The vet has said that he has to wrap each rabbit in a towel..the rabbit burrito…to control them.  Also,  carrying Snowy cradled in my arms, she has now twice, opened her mouth and positioned her front and lower incisors over my hand/finger.  Carrying her and feeling her teeth on my finger is a good communication that I’m not too far away from being bit.

Yes, I’ve definitely experienced the big bunny power kick. A couple of times I’ve picked up Sterling (I did end up adopting the big boy ) When he wants to get down, ouch!
