I give Olaf 1/4 cup of timothy hay pellets every night. Usually, they’re eaten within three hours and, if not, definitely gone by morning. The past few days there is still a decent amount of pellets left in the bowl in the morning and lesser, still, when I get home from work. He dives right in when I first offer them but doesn’t seem as interested.

I haven’t changed the brand or quantity. He eats his hay and fresh veggies as per usual. Bathroom habits are normal. Could he just be less interested in pellets, or something else? Doesn’t seem to have any other “symptoms” or unusual behavior. I was thinking about decreasing the amount by half to see if he just prefers less, but want to be sure it is safe?

        Thank you.

Not eating pellets or eating less pellets can be a sign of a dental problem, mainly molar spurs. It doesn’t have to be, but it is a bit of an observandum. So you’ll have to observe him. A bunny with a dental problem that makes him unable to chew his food properly often get stomach trouble like gas or gut slowdown. Hay is of course excellent both for teeth and tummy. Wet greens freshly rinsed is also good for the tummy.

You can divide his daily pellets into two servings and feed 12 hours apart and see if that spikes his hunger some. It’s good if you can monitor his weight, esp if you cut back on his pellets, weekly weighing and keeping a weight-diary can be very helpful.

I completely concur with bam. I have had the same problem with one of my buns Dusty recently. There was nothing wrong with him, he just wanted to eat hay. With my rabbit Gracie it is generally it is a sign her spurs are bothering her but she will not eat hay either at that point. So you have to watch or if concerned take him in for a checkup.

Thank you! I really appreciate it. I will keep an eye on him and definitely try splitting the pellet feedings to twice a day. I put extra hay in his rack and underneath it (in case he’s too lazy to pull it out). Hopefully he’s just being picky but I will definitely get him to the vet if it continues. If nothing else, it would be good to confirm that his teeth are healthy.

I’ll keep you posted if things do not improve soon.
