Jelly started chewing the wire of his cage (he goes in the cage when we are at work). I am concerned that this would hurt/damage his teeth. I have given him chew toys, apple sticks, lots of hay to chew on but he chews the cage door. I understand that he is doing that to get out of the cage but that is not an option. How can I discourage him from chewing the wire? I have already tried a bitter apple anti-chew spray but Jelly seems to actually like it… Help what do I do?

P.S this behavior started after I separated him from his brother who is in another cage next to his. They are about 3 months old and started showing dominance issues and needed to be separated when not supervised.

Is there a way that you could somehow tie a piece of cardboard on the cage where he is chewing? Then maybe he would at least get cardboard instead of the wire… I am not sure what your cage looks like or if this is even a possibility for you but maybe that will at least slow him down a bit on the chewing?

I’ve had various buns and guinea pigs chew on cage bars, regardless of what else they have to chew on, and it does tend to be to get through to another bun or pig. I assume it can’t be doing too much harm, as if it hurt, they would soon stop. Pippi does it quite often, esp when the other two buns have floor time, and the vet said his teeth are perfect…

Thank you for the responses! I did attach a cardboard toilet paper roll where he chews, but he managed to tear it and get to the wire again. I will look for ways to fortify the cardboard. Hopefully when they are altered in a month or so and can be together in the same cage again, he will stop.
