Lulu was vaccinated 6 months ago to mixy and vhd … So when we saw a healthy happy rabbit suddenly lifeless and all her babies passed away over the next four days it was unbearable. The vet rested for antibiotics and since they didn’t respond he said was vhd, but puzzling as she had the vax … After calling the vaccine company he found out there is a new strain of the virus new to the uk that has only been her a couple of months and the vax we had didn’t protect her …. We still can’t believe they are all gone miss them so much !!!!

I am very sorry for your loss of Lulu and her babies. It is terribly cruel and unfair. You did all you could, but sometimes that isn’t enough.

There is a new strain of the RVD virus in the UK that the Nobivac myxo-RVD isn’t effective against. It affects both adults and babies whereas the “old” VHD spares young kits under the age of 4 weeks. There is currently no vaccine in the UK, but there are hopes that a French vaccine, Filavac, will soon be cleared for import. There is an open group on Facebook where you can report in cases of VHD in Britain so as to alert other bunny- owners so they can refrain from letting their buns out and not forage for them in affected areas: myxo VHD Facebook group  I’m thinking it could be like a tribute to Lulu and her babies if you report her case in.

A lot of vets aren’t aware of RVHD2 yet. It’s present here in Australia also.

I’m very sorry for your loss, much be so hard to lose Lulu and her kits all at once. The thought of RVHD2 is quite scary and it’s something I worry about too given we don’t have a vaccine.

I’m not sure if you have other rabbits but be very careful to disinfect thoroughly, wash hands and change clothes before handling or feeding your other rabbits. Over here, we are being recommended 6 monthly calicivirus vaccine instead of yearly as an extra precaution against the strain, as there is evidence from early research which suggests that a more recent vaccination offers partial protection.
