I put ultracare flea and tick spray on my bunny and then he started licking himself and on the bottle there’s alot if warnings and whatnot. I read online about this stuff (after he had licked himself) and read that this stuff is extremely unsafe for animals and that some people’s pets have died from it. Some one help I don’t know what to due I don’t want my baby boy to die. I’m sitting here in tears holding him.

              Here’s what MediRabbit says:

The use of over the counter products against mite or ear mites should be avoided. Most contain pyrethrin. While one of the least toxic insecticides for animals and rabbits, pyrethrins/pyrethroids are neurotoxins which lead to continuous “firing” of nerves. Observed problems in rabbits include limb paralysis, seizure, coma, tremor, sometimes death.
Many of those products contain additives that prolong the effect of the pyrethrins, and inhibit the breakdown of these products in the body. They can lead to toxic reactions in rabbits. Piperonyl butoxide is one of them. If no immediate death, there should be **slow** recovery with time, around 48 h.

Did you wash the spray off as soon as you noticed a problem? This would be one of those rare occasions where a bath really would be warranted.

Have you notice neurological symptoms yet? You really do need to take your bunny to a vet. They will be able to treat the symptoms and provide support such as oxygen and fluids if needed.

If you can’t get to a vet find some activated charcoal at your nearest pharmacy, crush it to a powder and mix with some crushed pellets and water or baby food, and feed bunny the paste. AC is used in poisonings and should at least help a bit. (((pull through, bun bun)))

                  Hope you bunn is OK!

For fleas and ticks, Revolution is the drug of choice I believe.  I’ve used it a lot.  It comes in little plastic vials and you part the hair on their neck and squirt on the few milliliters in the vial. Amazing how the tiny amount of the drug infuses through their skin and protects them.  Unfortunately Revolution is a little expensive and available by prescription only (in the US).

House rabbits need to be protected also.  A flea in the outside grass can hitch hike a ride on you.  In desperation, a hungry flea will feed on you, but they prefer furry animals.  Once inside the house they have an opportunity to jump onto your bunny.

Once again best wishes for you bunney.  Keep us informed.

Hi, I hope your bunny is OK?

Maybe best to throw out the one you have and get one you can be sure is bunny safe? I’ve used Bob Martin’s spot on for small animals years, it contains a hormone that prevents insects from developing normally, halting their life cycle, and an insect repellent that a healthy rabbit would need to swallow several full vials of to do any serious damage.
