okay so my bunny is about 4 months old. we have always had a pretty good bond – i am allowed to pet him whenever, reach into his cage with absolutely no worries in the world, clean it, pet him in there, give him snacks, the whole nine yards. then today i came home from class everything seemed normal, so i opened his cage and put my hand near him and he backed away.. so i tried it again and he lunged at me very aggressively!! I’m not sure what i did to cause the sudden and extreme change over night. I’m scared to let him out because i don’t want him lunging at me again! after the lunge he is perfectly normal again. right now he is just hanging out in his cage. what?!

At 4 months of age, your bunny is becoming sexually mature, with a sudden surge in hormones. Those hormones can cause aggression and other behavior, such as spraying, humping, etc. That should all change for the better after he is neutered. Some rabbits are very cage protective and will attack a hand coming into their cage, but since your bunny didn’t mind that before, it sounds like the aggression is now being caused by his hormones. The only other reason I can think of that would cause his aggression, is if someone else had reached into his cage and tried to grab him or somehow scared him. Does he come out of his cage for exercise every day? That’s very important.

Thank you! and yes he is out and about, running around throughout the day for about 3-6 hours in total. i guess it could be hormones!

Maybe helpful advice.   Don’t move your hand directly in front of their face.  They have a blind spot in front of their nose area.  When moving a hand towards a bunny, first move it to the side of their face so they can easily see your hand, then move in for a forehead or shoulder pet.

He doesn’t hate you, he’ll be fine, bunnies have ‘Moody days’ just like us and he’ll be fine, when he’s ready have him neutered, boy bunnies are very territorial even after being neutered but he will get out of it.
