        Hi guys,

So, I got my two female babies and was told they were both mini rexes, however other people on a FB bunny group said that they aren’t MR, so I was wondering if you guys could help me out?

No, not mini rexes. They don’t have the rexed fur. I suppose it’s possible they are mini rex crossed with some other breed though.

I’m not certain an exact breed or breed mix can be determined. It’s a little easier to get an idea from weight and body form when they reach adulthood.

Is the black one sitting on the shoe? lol
They’re cute snuggling together like that.

They certainly don’t have rex fur. From what I can see, they also don’t have the short, curly whiskers that a rex would have.

Since the information you were told about the breed is wrong, are you sure that you were told the correct gender and that these bunnies are both female? It would be a good idea to make sure about that. Otherwise, you may be faced with a surprise litter in a short while.

Whatever breed they are, they are cute!

Thank you. They definitely don’t have curly whiskers, they didn’t have any when I first got them. I also don’t even know how old they, the ad said 8 weeks, then the lady said 12, so I’m not sure. But I want to take them to the vet so I’ll have a check. Is there a way for me to check without freaking them out too much?

              Thank you for your help.

                Good point tobyluv !

This certainly isn’t the best way..but.. if one or both are a boy and the testicles have descended (usually around 3-4 months old), you might spot them by getting the rabbits to stand on their back legs for a treat. Not stressful to them but also not a very accurate way to determine the sex! They might not be descended yet and can also pull them back up into the abdomen.

Otherwise, it’s a matter of pressing down on the genital mound to make the genitalia protrude to get a good look. This means either holding them on their back or upright against you why you support the bottom and have someone else check.

I agree, definitely not rex. As they get older, their shape may give some clues to their heritage.

I saw some holland lop x mini rex photos and they look alike, and one even has the same colouring as my bunny. But perhaps I’ll have to wait and see. Thank you for your help.

The rabbits may have been 8 weeks old when she first posted the ad, and by the time you went and saw them they were twelve weeks.

In terms of breed, I’m not sure yet either, they don’t really have any particular distinguishing features. Coat colour is not a good distinguishing feature. Like others have said, when their adults their weight and proportions may give a better idea of breed heritage. If the person selling was on an online site, you can usually report people for fraudulent sales like calling these mini rex when they aren’t. Unfortunately it’s quite common.

They deleted the ad once I bought them so I couldn’t do anything. The black one does have a shiny coat, and she is also getting some white hairs too on her back. The other one is a tort, she’s getting some black on her ears, and some on her nose, I also think she’s getting a bit more gray and her fur looks like it’s getting coarser, perhaps. Still very soft though.

The black (Nyx) one’s nose looks like :3 and the other one (Willow) is round. Their whiskers have just started to curl down too. They have different eye shapes too, Willow’s is more round and the Nyx’ is more almond.

I don’t care really about the breed, I’m more worried about the size, and if I’ll have the space.

Considering they are both exhibiting different features, they are likely mixed with a bunch of different breeds. How old are they now and how big are they? If they are young and already big, then it might be an indication that they will grow up to be big.

Willow is 2 lbs and Nyx is 3.2 lbs already and 3 months. Willow has gotten distinctive marks on her cheeks like she’s an anime bunny. Her cheeks have developed black, except for a little circle of tan and it looks like little moons? I’ll try to get a photo next time she’s out and about.
