Had to say goodbye to my sweet boy Rupert today. I will write something soon – my heart is just too broken right now.

I found these today-I was so excited to get to bring him home from the humane society.

My heart goes out to you so much Lesley. xx

Dear Rupert, you will be missed SO much, funny boy. You were blessed to have a life with Lesley. Stay close to her. I hope you’re hopping around without a care in the world now.
            ***Binky Free!***

If Kahlua will accept, please give her some cuddles from me.

ETA: One of my favourite pics of Rupert. He looks like he’s standing guard for his girl.  I also loved the one of him where he partially flopped on her, but I’m having trouble finding it.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone for the kind words. I think Rupert was the hardest loss so far. He and I both fought hard. This is my first time on the forum since I said goodbye. It’s been really hard to bring myself here to write what I wanted to write for my boy.

I brought Rupert home 8.5 years ago. I’d seen him on the humane society website for three months and begged and begged to bring him home. He’d been there six months when I finally got him.
It was a pipe dream but one day I attended our pet expo and he was there-I couldn’t even see him, just his butt, he was terrified and buried in the corner of the cage. I put my foot down with Dave and told him we were getting him. I may have promised to take the garbage out and do all the cleaning for the rest of our lives (which I reneged on!) but the deal was made and we brought him home.
I still remember the frantic trip to the humane society to get him, I was so worried he would be gone.

He was super skittish when we brought him home, was astounded that the food bowl stayed full. I’d planned to bond him with Kokanee and Kahlua, but Kokanee passed a few months after we brought him home-and they never took to each other.

Kahlua and Rupert were the perfect pair-he was reactive aggressive, and she was fluffy, faster and passive. So they worked easily-if he went to bite, she just ran off, and then tried again.

I did have to separate them when Kahlua over groomed his tail (a few years ago) and when she was sick with head tilt (her weird movement scared him and he would nip her).
But they rebonded easily and were so happy to be back together. Still breaks my heart that she won’t have another reunion with him-at least not in my home

Rupert lived in three homes with me, and besides being very bitey when meds were needed, was a wonderful sweet boy.

The last few years have been a battle-quite a few stasis episodes, and he needed his teeth down four times a year. That was quite the production as the bunny dentist is 1.5 hours away, but he always did well. His foot on his bad leg blew an abscess last year and it was never the same again. It would heal but without cushions, bandages and socks, it would open again in hours. He also frequently had a runny bum this year, requiring a bum bath each week. Then he ended up with something going on in his spine. We tried drugs but it wasn’t healing. The spine damage caused him to have difficulty getting up and his good leg became his bad as he was tilting onto his bum leg. The rabbit dentist didn’t think he was fit enough to undergo the dental procedure again and he wasn’t recovering from the spine issue, so we had to say goodbye.

We’re very lucky, as my vet was able to travel to my home (even though I live well out of town) so Rupert could go with dignity in his home. It’s still heartbreaking, and I miss him very much. I hope he knew how much he was loved.

I’m so sorry, K & K. Thank you for sharing the story of Rupert’s wonderful life with you. He was a very blessed bunny to have you as his mom. Your love and dedication as well as your knowledge of rabbits surely made his life the best it could be right up until his last day. It’s so painful to say goodbye, but the most kind and loving decision we can make when we know that their lives will not get better. I’m also glad that your vet came to your house- what a wonderful service.

                                          Binky free in paradise, Rupert!
