        Hello!

We’re fairly new bunny parents, having taken him in from a neglectful ex-roommate. We’ve been making great progress with him over the past couple months, he has run of the house now and gets along great with the cat. He’s been playing ‘chase’ with us the past week, and we always make sure to pay attention to his ears to make sure he’s happy instead of scared.

today he seemed to get especially riled up. he suddenly started tearing top speed around the living room, then dove into his cage, into his hidey-hole, and started thumping rapidly.

we immediately placed a few pieces of his favorite lettuce in with him, and after several minutes he settled down and came back out.

Did we misread the happy / scared signals or did he just overexcite himself?

I think it probably a case of something else spooked him today. It sounds like he bolted. Some rabbits will play as you’ve described, so don’t be discouraged.

I can walk past my rabbit room 10 times a day without issue, then out of the blue, I’ll walk past and for some reason they get spooked and dart for cover. Maybe the lighting was dim and they didn’t hear me ahead of time. Or one got a surprise and set the others off. I really don’t know! But they calm down and things return to normal.

My bunbun does that too. We’ll play and he’ll be super happy and relaxed, and then out of nowhere, bam! He bolts like it’s bunny blitz time. I suspect he hears or smells something I don’t – or perhaps I’m carrying a bag or something and my “different” shape spooks him. Either way, status quo resumes eventually.
