I’ve noticed in the past month or so Olaf’s urine smells stronger than usual. I normally never detect anything but when he goes into his litter box, it wafts around the room for a few minutes. It doesn’t last long but I am not sure why it would start smelling so strongly out of the blue.

He was neutered at 6 months (now 11 months) and the vet gave him a check-up last week, no infections or illness. I use a pine pellet litter with a grate so he doesn’t have to stand in it. Box gets changed ever other day. He gets 1/4 cup pellets, lettuce greens in the morning and parsley at night. The only change to his diet was at 8 months when I switched from alfalfa pellets to timothy hay pellets.

Any ideas as to why his urine scent would change? Thank you.

Funny enough this has just started with Olly, but it maybe his tray needing replacing because he chewed it and maybe some tinkle got in there, I was told don’t give bunnies lettuce, is his tinkle white? If it is it could be just calcium (Which Olly had when he came here.) I found out it was his hay, right hang on.
To the tune of Ghost busters…If there’s something strange in Bunnies box and it don’t smell good, who you gonna call??? Bam,
          Bam are you here?

If it is spring in your part of the world, there may still be a rise of hormones in a desexed rabbit. This could affect smell of urine.
Is he drinking plenty of water? Toileting in the litter box?

Sometimes it can be the litter box also. When old odours harbour in the plastic &when it becomes wet with pee again, it can smell strong.

Thank you for the suggestions and Ghost Busters theme!

I wash the tray after every refill but maybe I’ll give it an extra scrub and vinegar soak next time. I should clarify the “lettuce” is a baby spring mix with some romaine and dark greens. He drinks well, only uses his litter box, and has yellow-orange urine. No strong odor in the pan unless he’s actually using it at the time.

The spring theory could be it. He’s been much more active and molting.

Pellets can vary seasonally too. Some bags can smell quite different.
Is he on a new bag?

My bun’s urine started smelling stronger out of nowhere too! I think it may be the season?

I’m going to suggest changing seasons as well. Hormones can cause all kinds of changes and increased daylight and warmer weather seems to trigger this.
