Could somebody help me. Here is the thing : just got a 2nd bunny, named Muffin and today I went to the vet to get the info about vaccine for my little ball of fur. For Flash (my first one) we got him the vaccine against the myxomatosis and the VHD, but this time my vet told me that the VHD evolved since few years ago and that now there is another strain to vaccine. He talked about some new vaccine that would protect against both strains.

So I was wondering if anyone has heard about this kind of vaccine?

Is it safe or is there any side effects?

If this solution is not the safest is there an alternative solution?

I haven’t heard about a new vaccine, but I have heard about the new strain of VHD, which is very scary. I’ll have to ask my vet when I take my Yohio next week to get his yearly shot. (He gets the Nobivac double vaccine, Nobivac Myxo-RHD.) What country are you in?

I think this is for the rvhd2. I read about a uk rabbit owner going off to get this done this week. I will try find out more for you.
This is the virus that is affecting us here in Australia at the moment. We’re hoping we will be able to get the vaccine here.

Thank you SO MUCH Jersey!!! I remember you wrote about the new strain having come to Australia,
I don’t know if we have this strain in Sweden, but why wouldn’t we? I’ll have to call my vet now. Goodness.

It’s called the “European” strain here. They haven’t identified how it came to be here, as far as I know.

From that article I linked, it’s recommending space (even 4-6 months) between vaccines so even if your rabbits had recent jabs done, you’d need to wait before getting this new vaccine. Definitely good idea to get the ball rolling with ordering it in.

New vaccines make me nervous. Hopefully there haven’t been bad reactions. I believe they have improved them now, but we can only access one calici vaccine brand here and it’s the one that causes the most reactions. : (

ETA: minimum 2 weeks between the 2 different vacc’s

I asked my vet, they hadn’t heard of this new vaccine and dobted it was available in Sweden. They double-checked with another clinic that specializes in exotics, they hadn’t heard either.

I’m afraid of vaccines too, but I’m more afraid of these illnesses. Bam had a reaction to either myxo or the RVD back when they were two separate vaccines. It wasn’t anything really bad though, just two sores in each ear.

Wow! On the ear. I haven’t heard of reaction there. Maybe the myxo one? They can get mild myxo-like symptoms. Maybe it was like beginnings of a myxoma?

Jenny had a slight scab after her dual jab last year, but it soon cleared up.

My friend adopted two piggies from a rescue that got hit by the new strain of vhd, I think they lost a few babies from it sadly.

This is the first I’ve heard of a vaccine for it, but with Podge and Gina soon due, followed by Jenny, I’d like to know. I’ve just rung the girls’ vets and they don’t know anything about it, and say as far as they know, it’s just the annual one for vhd/myxi. I’ve also asked my friend to contact the rescue, as they might know, and if not, the owner will almost certainly make further enquires, as I know she was gutted to lose the babies from it.

                          It’s called Cunivak Gina.Jenny.

So guinea pigs are susceptible too?

No, it was baby rabbits they lost, just knew about it cos its where my friend got her piggy boys from…

Here is my friend’s reply from the lady who runs a rabbit and piggy rescue, after my friend messaged her the link JG posted, remembering this lady lost several rabbits to the new strain, including a number of babies, and so knows first hand what it does.

Hi. Yes heard about this cunivak injection a couple of weeks ago ( I am not happy to use this yet as I feel they have not done enough testing on it). It could be out of the frying pan and into the fire. Once I have seen there are no side effects for this injection I will look at it. (I feel they are using this new vaccination on rabbits while not knowing how it will affect the ones they are vaccinating)? I will look at starting this vaccination when 1 year has passed since it was first used to see if there are any fatalities! In 2017 if it looks to be ok and no side effects or deaths from this new vaccine then I will start to believe the injection is sound and safe. Until then not ready to use my rabbits as pardon the pun guinea pigs for drugs companies. Thanks for pointing this out to me. Best wishes

Thanks a lot for your answer. I actually called my vet to ask if it is the Cunivak that I could compare and take my decision according to your comments. And he told me that Cunivak was actually the vaccine that Flash had (my little bit older bun), but that this new vaccine for Muffin was actually a French one called Filavac. I guess as we are in France this vaccine is probably easier to get for the French vet. My vet looked quite confident about it, he is apparently using it for over 3 months and did not get any bad feedback.

But now did anyone would have some more information about this vaccine than what the company is saying and promoting, like side effects or the safeness of it (because like Jerseygirl, new vaccine makes me also nervous but the illness even more especially since if the rabbits gets it there is no cure).

Hi, I just popped in to answer to Bam, that yes RHDV2 has been found in Sweden last year. There were several small news posts about it. Here’s one of the news from last fall http://www.sva.se/om-sva/pressrum/nyheter-fran-sva/ny-typ-av-kaningulsot-i-sverige  and here is a more recently updated info text on it in Swedish http://www.sva.se/djurhalsa/andra-djurslag/kanin-sjukdomar/kaningulsot . Sorry for the Swedish links, but info about Sweden is more easily available in Swedish

I’ve recently heard about this type 2 myself. Good news is that Mälardalens smådjursklinik has got the neccessary license for vaccin against it, called FILAVAC. They are now waiting for the vaccine to be sent to them. I have asked my local vet to search for this license too, and it seems like they gonna try. It doesn’t cost anything for the vetstation, but it seems to take some time to get it.
