So, I went on a week long vacation to Florida for Spring Break last week and returned today. I was excited to see my bunnies, but they obviously didn’t feel the same way. Rolo was a little more welcoming, which she always is but she wasn’t her normal self. Penny is the shy one, so she hid in the corner and it wasn’t super unusual for her to do that. Then, when I was getting ready for bed, I picked up Rolo and held her for a minute and then did the same with Penny. While I was holding Penny, she started breathing really fast so I tried to soothe her and put her back in her cage. Her breathing still hasn’t returned to normal even though she is back in her cage with Rolo.

Now, information about their care while I was gone. My friend came over twice a day; once in the morning and once at night. In the morning she would open their cage doors and let them roam in an open space surrounded by an indoor fence. She would also give them pellets and hay. At night, she would close the doors to their cage and make sure they had plenty of hay. They had water during the whole week, and their environment didn’t change much besides the fact that there was less noise. There was only one thing I noticed was different when I got back; they had dug along the side of their cage and torn up all of the carpet. They have done it before, sure but not that much. Usually I leave their doors open day and night and they never dig up that much carpet.

If y’all have any tips, prior experience and any input to help me with Penny, that’d be great. Like I said, Rolo is basically acting normal and it is just Penny who is worrying me. Thank you!!

It sounds like they missed you, bunnies are like kids. “Where is Mummy / Daddy?” and can cause havoc, they will calm down soon.

Perhaps your friend picked them up a couple times to put them away in the evenings? Or had to chase them. Could Penny be still wary from having someone different there?

Sounds like they are holding a grudge because you left them. They should come around after awhile. I also second jersey, could Penny have been scared by the person caring for them. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional. But you said she is shy so even some, uh, coaxing to get her back in the enclosure could have been frightening for her.

Okay, thank you! Penny is still being a little skiddish but Rolo is coming around more and more. I don’t know how the person I left Penny and Rolo with treated them, but Penny gets scared by everything so I’m sure even if she was picked up and put back in the cage, she would get scared.
