Hi all, I just adopted a 1 year old holland lop a few weeks ago and got him neutered on Thursday. He’s doing great, came home alert and eating/drinking 4 hours after his neuter and has been fine. I’m just wondering if it’s normal for a rabbit to go hump crazy after a neuter? He’s rabid about it and humps everything that moves the slightest and doesn’t even want to “do” his stuffed bear anymore, just my arm and nothing distracts him. I figured his humping would very gradually subside, not that he would be even more bent on just procreating. Is this normal? What can I do to help him? I would call my vet but they are closed on weekends.

Thanks! The bunny is named Bolbi, after the funny character from Jimmy Neutron, and the word Bum in my username is short for my precious gentlebun that passed away recently, Bumbles.

Welcome bolbum (love the explanation of your user name).

There is sometimes an increase in hormonal behaviours right after neuter. It’s thought there may be a surge in testosterone due to the handling of the testes for the procedure. That’s what I’ve heard anyway
The good news is, it won’t last. His hormones will level out over the coming weeks.

Thanks! And thanks for your reply, I read about the testosterone surge could that be why? should I be expecting this behavior to stop eventually? it’s kind of annoying because I can’t interact with him any movement results in being painfully mounted/humped

Yes. A lot of others that experienced some unwanted behaviours post-neuter reported that it lasted about a week.

Ok thanks! hopefully it stops soon. I feel bad that he’s always in his play pen but he just won’t not hump and it’s aggressive and painful
