My vacuum is well on its way out and needs to be replaced. I was just curious what brands/types vacuums everyone was using to clean up after their bunny housemates. We have a Dyson Slim from many, many years ago that struggles with hay and lots fur. It was constantly getting clogged, and it wasn’t always the easiest to take apart and unclog. So, what do you use for a vacuum? Is it upright? Maybe a shopvac? Is it easy to clean and maintain? Does is manage pet hair and hay okay?

We have a Shark Navigator or something like that. Its not the best with hay, but it comes apart in many different areas so its not hard to clean out if theres a hay clog somewhere. Its not overly loud either (unless you use the deep clean setting) so the bunnies arnt too bothered by it either. I only have to use the deep clean setting during shedding seasons, otherwise it gets fur pretty well out of the carpet on normal settings

I use a barrel / canister type vacuum cleaner with this attachment that I bought separately.

It acts like a bypass so hay and poop and fur don’t actually go into the flexible hose or bag. It takes frequent emptying and it does clog up from time to time but it is simple to unclog compared to a clog further down the pipe.  Mostly though, I sweep and use a dust pan.

I sweep pretty much all hay and poop. But stray strands get vacuumed as do the piles of bunny fur. I keep a little vax dustbuster handy for just doing a quick vac around the inside and outside of the cage. The thing I like about it is that I can just use it while a bunny is still out and about because there’s no cord.

My main vacuum is just a regular household vacuum, one with a bag (not an upright). To be honest I cannot stand upright vacs because most of them can’t get into tight spaces like you can with the long handle and maneuverable head on a regular vacuum. There’s nothing fancy about our vacuum, it’s not one rated for pet fur or anything, but it does a great job. Picks up fur, hay and poop really easily and I’ve never managed to clog it yet. Of course you need to replace the bag but I find the bag lasts ages (either that or I don’t change it often enough ) This is the one I have: http://www.hoover.com.au/hoover-smart-bagged-vacuum-cleaner-1 it was quite cheap as far as vacuum cleaners go which is why we got it. Not cheap and nasty cheap, but cheap end of the scale cheap I doubt it would suck up lots of hay well, but kept things pretty well swept so I really didn’t have piles that I was trying to suck up.

I have a Vax, its one down from the Pet Vax which I wish I got, but its pretty good and was in the sale, but the belts break easily if it catches on a blanket or something, I made the big mistake putting plain blue carpet down and when dust goes on it it really looks bad, Olly liked the old vacuum cleaner we had, it was a cylinder one, for some reason Olly would sit on it and hold the little handle when I was cleaning up, but he does not like the new one, I bring it in and he goes in his cage.
