Collar/harness as precaution during outdoor play

  as summer approaches, im beginning to become more and more nervous if pearl runs away or escapes her outdoor run. im thinking of getting a comfort harness with an ID tag on it for her to wear while playing outside – just for peace of mind. thoughts? collar or harness?

  Definitely a harness, collars are much more dangerous for rabbits. While both can get caught on things, a collar presents a very possible choking hazard or the risk of breaking neck or back when it gets caught. Due to the extra support that a harness offers, both of these things are very unlikely. Also if she plays outside quite a bit, it’s also worth considering getting her microchipped.

  My harness is a harnness and leash in one. It is by Coastal Pet Inc.

  But thats for more of a walk. Can rabbits be microchipped like cats and dogs are?

  Chewie was supposed to be microchipped by the shelter where I adopted him. I stepped in just in time and stopped it – my vet (now retired) who specialized in buns told me that while buns do get chipped, there’s a higher risk of the chip sliding and also of abscesses forming at the chipping site. Plus in Kuwait there’s no animal control, or anyone who’d even scan for a chip – except for this wonderful animal shelter – but since they’re a one hour drive into the desert, a chip seemed pointless. Maybe after my retirement when we move to France.

  Make sure that the harness is an “H” style harness. Two loops with a joining strap like this one here: http://ep.yimg.com/ay/rabbitshop/h-style-harness-1.gif
  
  As for microchipping. Yes rabbits can be done. Medium – large breed rabbits can probably just be done during a routine check up. I had Bandit chipped under anesthetic when he was neutered as he was still pretty small and the vet recommended it was done then rather than just on the table during a consult.
